Visit to Isaan, what is a nice travel route?

Dear readers,

In March I will travel to Thailand for the third time, for four weeks. The plan is to visit Isaan for 10 days the first week. At the top of my list are Phanom Rung, Wat phu Tok and Sala Keoku.

What should I definitely visit, but above all: what is a nice travel route (departing from BKK)? I want to avoid spending half my time in Isaan in trains or vans, or at least limit the travel time as much as possible.

A car would probably be the best options, but I'm not very familiar with traffic in Thailand and as a solo traveler it is also relatively expensive.

Thanks in advance for the tips.

Regards,

Mic (BE)

Contact Robert Merks from Resotel Baan Sanook, you can stay there and he will arrange everything for you !!! I certainly have no personal gain from this and know Robert mainly through Facebook !!!

    Also recommended are:
    the Pimai National Historical Park,
    the swampland north of Chonnabot,
the national parks of the province of Loei,
the town of Chiang Khan on the Mekong,
the Mekong between Chiang Khan and Si Chiang Mai,
Nong Khai on the Mekong with the sculpture garden,
Pha Pham National Park near Sakon Nakhon,
    That Phanon on the Mekong,
    Pa Taem National Park,
The Temple of the Million Beer Bottles in Khun Han.

Furthermore, Resotel Baan Sanook by Robert Merks is indeed a recommendation. Beautiful resort. Swimming pool with a fantastic view. Robert knows a lot about the area.

Papa Chili Isaan Lodge by Huub Oudenhoven is 12 km from Phanom Rung. Huub has lived in Thailand for a long time and knows the country like the back of his hand. You will be welcomed with Limburg hospitality. Here you can experience the real Isaan among the bears.

Dear Mic, if you want to visit some sights in Isaan, it is also important to mention where those sights can be found in order to get good advice on your question,
I live here for ten years but I don't know all the temples etc . by name and location.
Participating in traffic in Thailand is not recommended for a short stay, you already indicated in your question.
The only thing you can give to visit Isaan also depends geographically on what you want to see, fly from BKK to Kon kean, or Udonthani, then you are in the heart of Isaan and plan your trips from there, which you want to see, Just for the record, Isaan has 20 provinces and a third of the population of Thailand.

Phanom Rung is located at Nanrong, Wat phu Tok is a temple 35 km from Bueng khan and Sala Keoku is the sculpture park in Nong khai.

If you want to move around in Isaan without a car, you have a problem. Public transport is not much in Thailand, in Isaan it is even less. You will come in March for 4 weeks and March is the hottest month in Isaan in which it will be 40+ degrees in the middle of the afternoon. So take care of transportation.

That can be transport for the day by renting a taxi, van or large tuktuk or you rent a pickup yourself, then you are high. You won't find the busiest highways in north and east Isan, so fly to Udon Thani or Ubon Ratchathani and avoid traffic after dark.

You can pick up the hotel or lodge somewhere, but how do you get to your destination? Sala Keew Ku in Nongkhai is miles outside the city, taxis are difficult to find (Nongkhai only has three taxis...), that leaves you with the tuk tuk, but how do you get back... But you could rent a moped locally if you want. have a motorcycle license and international RBW.

You come in the hottest time of the year, don't forget that.

    Dear Mike,

If you are going to fly and go to Udon Thani, take a look at the site of the
    airport.
They offer various transport options at good prices.
It is also possible to rent a private taxi, motorcycle, bus, tuk tuk, etc. in Nongkhai at good prices
    and cheap prices.

It would indeed be good to rent a private taxi with air conditioning, and then take a day trip.
The advantage is that they stop where and when you game.

    Yours sincerely.

Ps it might be better for you to make trips in the area per day per city,
    deTaxi knows almost every spot.
