Dear readers,

Suppose you want to fly to Thailand at short notice, for example next week. Is there still such a thing as a last minute flight at an acceptable rate? This used to be possible with airberlin.

Why are the one-way tickets from Bangkok so expensive?

Yours faithfully,

Willy

Airlines use a “yield system” when selling their tickets. They work with contigent tickets that get more and more expensive as the departure date approaches. However, if a flight doesn't get full enough (occupancy rate is low), the price drops again. BUT: They will never dump seats to fill the flight. A self-respecting airline would rather fly with empty seats than lower the price, because then travelers will gamble (on future flights) that the seats will become cheaper. And an airline does not want that, it actually hopes that a traveler who really has to fly will pay the full price. That is why tickets are also cheaper well before the departure date; Those travelers still have a choice when it comes to departure date. The "last minute" traveler who really has to leave tomorrow will pay the full price; He has no choice.

So no, really last minute on scheduled flights don't really exist (anymore). It is still possible on holiday flights where travel organizations buy the tickets, because that organization has an obligation to the airline and in that case an empty seat is a loss of income. But on the route to Bangkok you will find few such tickets.

Thank you, that's what I suspected, but now I'm sure.

      Dennis,

Thank you very much for this transparent representation of things as they are.
      That's useful!

My impression was indeed that last minutes were more readily available on chartered flights.
And there are not many to BKK.
In the high season it can sometimes work through agencies that offer all-inclusive trips.
These are organized sweet trips of usually 10 days and then you quickly land on Phuket, for example.
Nothing for the seasoned Thailand goer.

Furthermore, there are cheap flights to book due to the competition, the message is to act quickly. And plan your trip well in advance.

      David

With Groupon you can currently get a discount on an Etihad ticket from Brussels.

Well, I think it's a great honor to label this as a life question. But on topic; the only thing I would like to label last minute is “ltur”, they only sell tickets for the next 3 months and have a daily changing offer. Sometimes there is a "luck" in between.
I don't have an explanation why tickets from Bangkok are considerably more expensive. Maybe try it from Kuala Lumpur? (With a budget flight from Thailand to KUL)

Try BMAIR, you just have to call them, you can sometimes make a price agreement.
    Speak from experience!

This week another offer of a return ticket to Bangkok with Norwegian air from Stockholm for less than 350 Euro !!

      Norwegian airline offers seem cheap.
However, you have to pay separately for luggage, meals, etc., which makes it much more expensive than the next one in the list.
Just look at Skyscanner, you can see what the prices are per month.
Usually around 350 something to book.

One-way airline tickets are always relatively more expensive than a return ticket. I often fly between AMS and BKK and this is usually a one-way trip, because I often don't know when I will return to the Netherlands. Once I know approximately when the trip will take place, I set a ticket alarm on 'skyscanner.nl' which will then send you an email informing you of a price change on the date you choose. Ideal and has already saved me a lot of time and money. You can sometimes get single tickets from Schiphol for 225 euros, while my cheapest ticket from Bangkok was 359 euros.

Just talked to an acquaintance who has settled in Thailand, he told me that he regularly drove to the airport and booked a ticket there with any airline that still had room. Anyone have experience with that?
