Dear readers,

I understand that in Thailand it is best to buy a new SIM card to make calls.

There are several providers of SIM cards in Thailand. I have the following questions:

  • Which provider should you choose?
  • How many baht should you put on it and how long is it valid?
  • What about WiFi subscriptions?

Thanks for the responses,

Johan

    Dear Johan,
Six months ago I had the exact same situation as you.
Then, after some research, I opted for the following solution:
    – Provider: dtac. I think all providers are sufficient to call, but this one had the clearest website.
    – Buy SIM card: to make calls you need a phone number/SIM card. You can get this at the airport of arrival. See http://www.dtac.co.th/en/visitingthailand/TouristPrepaidSIM.html
If, like me, you don't feel like buying a SIM card on arrival, you can also order one online. I bought this on http://www.amazon.com/Thailand-Prepay-Travel-Tourism-Vacation/dp/B007S02DFK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382213996&sr=8-1&keywords=dtac+sim
    (still choose the right seller)
    – Now that you have a SIM card, you should be able to make calls. Top up your card first (online or in Thailand) with an amount of your choice. (500 THB – €12 seems sufficient to me) Pay dead simple online with credit card via https://store.dtac.co.th/en/irefill
    – International calling is cheap: 10 THB per minute to mobile phones (which is €0,25) or 5 THB to landlines (€0,13). You make a call as follows: http://www.dtac.co.th/en/postpaid/services/004.html (2nd way)
    – WiFi subscriptions are also quite cheap: 70 THB/month. (= slightly less than €2,00)
    See http://www.dtac.co.th/en/trinet/dtacwifi.html
    – Optionally, you can also opt for mobile internet, then you can use the internet anywhere. I think you should take the 1 month – 100 MB option for 99 THB. (= €2,50)
    http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/Happy-internet-package.html
The internet speed on my device was rather slow, because my mobile phone did not fully support the network. Still, it was completely usable.

Hopefully I helped you a bit.

You will often receive a free SIM card from AOT – True Move Company upon arrival at Suvarnahbuhmi airport. So that's just a SIM card. So bring a mobile phone from home without a SIM card. You can charge this SIM card at any 7-Eleven. We always charge the card with 300 or 500 Thb. An International Call costs 1.50 thb/min if you choose 00600 for the country code. An SMS costs 5 THB. You can upgrade this card for WiFi. That is called TrueMove EDGE/Wifi. You then call *9000 with this card (in Thailand) and you can then upgrade to WiFi.
You can also “”order”” wifi per hour or per month. You text “”wifi”” to no. 9789 and a password is sent to you by text message.
You must have an x amount on it otherwise your number will expire.
By the way, I wouldn't buy wifi in Thailand. Everywhere and nowhere are internet cafes and often there is free wifi. The hotels offer wifi for little.
    Success.

I bought a SIM card from AIS; 12call 3G, which costs 50 bath (without calling credit). It seems that this provider has the best coverage throughout Thailand. You can charge the SIM card and purchase an internet bundle for 199 bath that is valid for one month. Then you have internet if there is no WiFi nearby. I don't know (yet) how much international calling costs, I don't think I will use it much, if at all. They can arrange and set all this for you in the AIS store, and you can then purchase new credit at any 7/11.

    Provider: AIS or DTAC
Call credit: 2 baht/minute. So with 100 baht you can call for 50 minutes. Do the math…

Wi-Fi: Don't! Internet bundle costs 213 baht (199 + 7% tax!!) with both AIS and DTAC. Then you have 250 MB (DTAC) for 30 days. Free WiFi is available in hotels, starbucks, etc. so that 250 mb is also enough normally.

Incidentally, I have never seen, heard or received that you would get a free True Sim on Suvarnabhumi. Who, what and where???

Dennis, I (and all other passengers) received 2 DTAC SIM cards as a welcome gift on Suvarnabhumi.

Dennis, we have already received this free SIM card twice at the airport. True Move “”girls”” were handing out these cards. The first time in December 2011 and last December 28, 2012 the same new SIM card from True Move International. They are BEHIND customs but before the belts on Suvarnahbuhmi.

Thank you for your comment Marianne.

I find the description “behind customs, but before the belts” confusing, because you (logically) first get the baggage belt and then customs. Then it should be “behind/after the belts and before customs”. Is that right?

I will arrive at Suvarnabhumi again tomorrow and this time I will pay more attention to promotional ladies…

        • Marianne Kleinjan Kok says up

Dennis,. You're right. I'll be clearer. You arrive from the plane in front of the immigration desks. Where your passport and visa are checked. When you are through this you will see the money exchange offices behind the immigration desks. Then you walk to the belts and last year there was a TrueMove lady next to the belts and another lady just before you leave the baggage hall with your luggage. So before the exit / customs control. Hopefully they will be back at this time and not just in December…Have a nice trip…

The DTAC often has poor coverage in the north. In the beginning of telephony, Thailand was divided between Dtac for the south and AIS for the north. However, the AIS works everywhere in the north. But I didn't know what Daan said about that true move international card, so I'm going to buy it next time.

Buy a True Move INTERNATIONAL SIM card at 7 eleven for 49 bht! You can upgrade it with 90 to 500 bht. First you have to log in, but that will show you the way automatically.
If you call to the Netherlands, first dial 00600 and then country and city code and number. You then call from 1 bht per minute to the Netherlands!!! Please note that you get a TRUE MOVE INTERNATIONAL SIM card, the envelope you receive looks elongated, narrow and yellow!!!
We have been using this for years and it is super cheap! Good luck

In Thailand, 3G is now really getting off the ground with the accompanying SIM cards, data bundles and so on. If you want to call and use the internet via 3G, TrueMove H works the best is the experience of my girlfriend (she lives in Bangkok) and myself. For tourists there are 3 special “Tourist InterSims” that are quite okay in price: http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/3g/packages/iplay/entry/2330
You can also check the other regular packages on that website at the top. With True, but also with the other providers, you can also use their WiFi network with a prepaid SIM.
Check whether your smartphone can handle the correct frequencies, for example True is at 850 and 2100 MHz with their 3G internet.

@all, thank you for your comments. Still have a few questions/comments, I'm going for the 7th time now (each time at the end of December), but I've also never seen women handing out SIM cards. I just don't know that there is free WiFi in many places in my hotel and it costs 2000 bht for a month there, if the connection is good I have no problem with this, but I am and will remain Dutch so if it can be cheaper…. In short, I think the true move will be the best for me, then I just have a question about that internet bundle, is it 199 bht for a month of unlimited internet? And if not, how much will it cost?

    • sunny says up

The internet bundle of AIS of 199 bath is for 300 MB per month. I think you have 399GB for 1 bath, but I don't know if they also have unlimited and what that costs.

we have an internet phone here and internet via CAT. Always worked fine, but when we arrived here again we discovered that we can receive telephone, call locally, but internationally 00931 …. we get a tone that we have dialed an incorrect/non-existent number. According to CAT, there is something wrong with the line, which is of course cool because if we can call you locally and receive international calls, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the line or the internet. Now my question was whether maybe the preselection number has changed from 009 to another number, this could explain this.
    Thanks for the info.
