Reader question: Can you open an and/or account at Bangkok bank?
Dear readers,
Is it possible to open an 'and/or account' with Bangkok bank? I already have an account in my name and a debit card. My wife also has a bank card of my bank number.
At the bank they say that is possible, but then you will receive a new account number. So I have to inform all concerned in the Netherlands that I have a new number again, which I am not happy with. All that hassle again.
Are there people who have the same problem, or can the bank only put two names on the account?
Regards,
Arie
Considered opening a new and/or account, then transfer from existing account to and/or account.
At the time I was able to open an and/or account for me and my wife without any problems.
When I came to the Immigration Office for the annual renewal of my visa, I was told that the money was not mine, because my wife could withdraw everything. Even 50% was more than enough for the required balance, but people did not want to accept that construction either.
So I was forced to have the account converted to a new account in my name.
So dear Arie, know what you're getting yourself into
Is possible without problem. At the time I opened such an account at Kasikorn Bank with my Thai friend
Bangkok Bank opens and/or accounts.
But having an existing account in 1 name changed to an and/or account is not possible, that requires a new account.
Keep in mind that if you also use an account for your Visa, that it is in 1 name, that is not always maintained everywhere and always, but don't look for that problem.

I have several and/or accounts in Thailand, including accounts that were previously only in my name.
A major disadvantage of and/or account in Thailand is that it is actually an account and not or. So for almost all matters big and small you both have to go to the bank and sign. I also experienced a few times that the bank refused a transfer or check because only my name was on the check or transfer (with the correct name and account number, of course). In other words, a Thai and / or account can cause a lot of problems, so I only have an account that is only in my name.
NB: concerns SCB accounts.
Dear Henk, the nature of an and or account is that precisely with such an account you can dispose of the account in its entirety and do not have to go together to be authorised.
There is also the and/and account, but you always need both for that.
That this would be different at the SCB bank than the Bangok Bank seems strange to me, but never say never.
Nico B
They are and/or bills, as it also says in the name.
Strange indeed: my wife and I have an and/or account; i can transfer money from that account to an external account with just my signature without a problem, but if a check is to be put on it it has to be in both names…..
We can both withdraw and transfer money separately. But for many other things we both have to go to the bank with passports, etc. For example for an address change, setting up internet banking, credit card application, etc, etc. As so often in Thailand, one bank branch may have different rules than another, but this is my experience.
You can open as many accounts as you want with any bank. Only you have to go to a new bank branch every time. For example, if you live in Hua Hin, which may have 10 branches there, you can open an account anywhere.
My wife has several account numbers at Bkk Bank and elsewhere, but always in a different branch and I was there, so that is possible.
PS:
Bangkok Bank does have a new arrangement and that is:
When you open a Saving Account or a Euro Account, etc., you must first collect a form from immigration and then you can apply for a new account. And that Form remains valid for one month so you can open multiple account numbers or other things for which you need such a form.
I only opened a Savings Accout and Euro account on July 14th and first had to get such a form and have it stamped by immigration, it costs nothing, but in Udon they ask for 500 bath and that then disappears in the TIPBOX and you will not receive a bill there by.
Kasikorn, Krungsri does not request a form to open an account.
