Dear readers,

I am planning to go backpacking with my girlfriend in Southeast Asia in early 2017. The journey starts in Bangkok and from here I want to travel via Northern Thailand through Laos and Cambodia, to end up in Bangkok again.

Does anyone know a nice and efficient route for this? The duration of the trip will be approximately 6 to 7 weeks. Not all distances have to be covered by train or bus, flying is also a good option for us.

I would like to hear from you!

Regards,

Remco

Take a look at guided by curiosity. It was a three-week trip for these people, but you can benefit from it

As an experienced backpacker (visited more than 138 countries), South East Asia is well known to me.
I could talk and write about this for hours, but don't worry, the 3 countries you mention are worth the effort and are easy to travel in 7 weeks.
As a means of transport, Air Asia is the cheapest and fastest, but of course you don't see anything in the air.
Northern Thailand is also cheap and easy to reach from Bangkok by train.
From Cheng Rai you cross the border with Laos and there you take the boat over the Mekong to Luang Prabang.
Other forms of transport in Laos are minibuses and rental motorbikes are popular in the south.
Via South Laos you can easily get to Cambodia (as far as Angkor Wat) - a must see place. Taking the boat to Batambang is also a nice experience.
Cambodia and Thailand also have good bus connections.
You can always contact me for more detailed information.
PS. Read some travel reports on "Wegwijzer".

I would like to use your further information, how can I get in touch with you?

    Dear Remco,
NB. If you want to travel from Siemreap to Battambang in Jan/Feb, don't try a boat. The water is either low or there is no water at all! By bus or taxi, 3 hours.

    Dear Remco,

    Consult site: Seat 61, Thailand!

    Good luck, Eric
