Dear readers,

In February I fly from Brussels to Manila via BKK with THIA Airways. Now I have an almost 8 hour transfer in BKK. So I plan to go to the center of Bangkok, I know the city quite well, this is not a problem. But is this correct that I will have to pay an extra tax of about 1000 baht? Because I left the airport.

Greetings,

Steve (BE)

Don't you just get your visa exemption for 30 days? It costs nothing.

Francois does not understand the question. Incidentally, IF you are asked to pay the airport tax (applies to departure, is 700 bt, and expires during transit, just like for example also on AMS / Schiphol - we NLers who board there pay around € 35 hidden in ticket costs for this), then you will not escape it. Messages about it - how strict it is checked etc. vary quite a bit - as with many Thai businesses and seem to be the mood of the day, the interest of the employee you happen to meet, etc. IF you already have the boarding pass for flight 2 in BRU obtains, the probability is quite low, but not 0.

Ah, so it's about the airport tax. I didn't know how that worked and should have just kept my mouth shut 🙂

You probably have to pay airport tax. When paying for the ticket, it was not assumed that you would leave the airport in Bangkok, otherwise they would have included the tax in the price of the ticket. By the way, this has nothing to do with the visa.

    I quote from another site,

”A little less than five hours later, the alarm went off and it was time to go back to the airport. At the airport of Bangkok I was in for a surprise. I suddenly had to pay 700 baht airport tax, because I had left the transfer area. I found this very striking, since I had to leave the transfer area anyway to pick up my suitcase. Oh well, I decided not to make a fuss about those 20 euros.

I had to pay the 700 baht at the ticket center. The Thai Airways employee at the service desk was very friendly, but what an administration. A scribble here, a scribble there and a few more copies. Fifteen minutes later I was finally able to continue my way.”
