Dear readers,

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that if you are in a situation where you are (still) established in the Netherlands, but your Thai wife is in Thailand – assuming she is not liable to pay tax in the Netherlands, and you are married in community of property – you only have to declare half of your assets to the tax for box 3. Even if the total sum is only in your name on an account.

I didn't know that before and so far I have always paid 2x too much. The IRS has no problem with that!

Regards,

Jasper

So you see that a good tax advisor is actually priceless, and certainly not a luxury.

more a matter of carefully reading the explanation of the questions from the tax authorities and possibly further consulting their site or requesting information from them. Completely free and saves you a tax advisor.

      Googling will also help.

(and yes I am a tax expert)

Certainly, reading the explanation of the questions carefully, or consulting the site, and even asking for information is completely free. Apparently Jasper didn't do this, or felt himself tax expert enough, and in retrospect a tax advisor would have been the cheapest option. Moreover, if everyone had an easy answer to the questions asked, then all tax advisors would be unemployed and would have to retrain. Moreover, if you yourself request information from the tax office, this will at best be extremely minimal, because this falls under advice, and is not part of their statement.

Dear Jasper, I don't think you paid 2 x too much. If you made this mistake, you overpaid 50% in Box 3 income.
You can ask the Inspector to return the overpayment given the mistake you made. You can do this by telling your story as described above. The Inspector can then officially grant a reduction of your assessment.
    Success.

Dear Jasper, read that you paid twice too much to the tax authorities for years.
You can make a correction for up to 5 years. So just contact the tax authorities.
    Success.
