Reader Submission: The hammer nail game is scam!
Dear readers,
I was in Phuket (Patong) last week. I let myself be seduced by the hammer nail game. Drive the nail into a tree stump as quickly as possible.
Thought it was kind of odd that the bargirl did and could do it so quickly. Later on the internet I read that it is pure scam: fidelitycheckonline.wordpress.com/thai-bar-scams-hammering-nail
You have been warned.
Regards,
Steven
Nice game, won often enough. Just practice a lot and hit hard. By the way, I don't recognize the scam, I was often allowed to pick up a hammer myself, select the screw myself and decide where to hammer it into the wood. Always take into account the fact (and this also applies to 4-in-a-row) that those girls are busy with those games day in and day out. So they are well trained! By the way, I don't often play for drinks. If it's fun, we'll pay for the drinks anyway.
Look at it the same way Bob.
When it comes to drinks, it's fairly harmless.
Like the game of wood pull or what is it called? A wooden turret built from wooden rods stacked lengthwise, where you have to pull one out every round. Without collapsing the case, because then you have lost. On those rickety tables and with barely visible footwork, you obviously let someone lose like that… and then you pay for the drinks.
Different when it comes to money.
Didn't someone win at such a street game, with 3 upturned cups and a ball.
When he wanted to put his money away, his wallet turned out to be stolen. One scam does not exclude the other ;~)
Well Steven, not a scam at all! Just a way for a sensible – sober – handy bargirl to make a stupid – drunk – clumsy – braggart pay for a drink.
Just switch sides next time so you have to pat her nail in and she has to hammer in your nail.
I think losing to a bargirl in front of your friends damaged your ego, but don't worry about it! Thailand is beautiful! Life is Beautiful ! Enjoy it to the fullest!!
And hit next to the nail again.
Have participated dozens of times in Phuket Bang Na area with nail driving. Never seen stumps of wood in which no nail could be driven deep by farang and girl. Probably a tree stump that has been prepared in advance, but then to tell a story that all hammer nail activities are a scam is sensationalism journalism of a losing drunk farang.
I've tried everything to win against a bargirl and sometimes I succeed. Only it is very difficult because these girls play that game 300 days a year
scam? I do not think so.
Based on my expertise I have established the following.
Wood comes in different hardnesses. Wire nails also come in different qualities, both in hardness and in the sharpness of the point. Moreover, a wire nail penetrates more easily in crosscut wood than in longitudinal wood.
The bark is on the outside of a tree. Behind the bark is the bark. The nutrition transports the tree through the sapwood. This is often also the softest part of the tree and is located between the bark and the heartwood.
It is therefore advisable to know well what the quality of the wire nail is and also where the softest part of the wood is located.
Then the hammer. The hammer head used for striking should be as flat as possible and not too smooth. The use of the hammer will eventually bend the flat head more. That is because the frequent striking of iron on iron (not just on wire nails) causes the edges to be pressed more than the center of the head. It also makes the head smoother. Due to the smooth slightly round surface of the hammer head, the hammer slides off the wire nail more easily due to imbalance, causing the wire nail to be bent.
Finally, the stroke determines with what force the hammer hits the head and with what speed the wire nail penetrates the wood. A good hit starts with the hammer over your head with your arm bent.
All these facts play a role, in addition to the experience of doing it frequently. A bargirl will not engage in said facts. Experience plays a role for her. She won't win easily against a good carpenter. But from a drunken carpenter, let alone a drunken bookkeeper or shop assistant. It has nothing to do with scamming. Monkey sandwich, shall we say.
They don't want to 'tack with me' anymore. I usually win on my slippers. I often think where is the catch that will soon pop up somewhere. I haven't encountered that viper yet. With 4 in a row and billiards I have no chance. By the way, I don't lose thousands of bats or even euros with this entertainment. That is possible with poker scam and ping pong scam. But a man forewarned is always to his advantage in Thailand.
Well, the purpose of all these games is usually clear anyway. That drink isn't that important. The rest of the evening and night all the more!
No problem!
Always fun games in a beer bar.
Especially if you manage to win against the odds . Got this done 3x in a row on koh chang with that wooden block tower game Jenga.
Couple of tips:
Play at the beginning of your visit keep more drink the less chance.
I just always ask what the costs are in the event of a loss, usually a lady drink then at least I don't have a discussion afterwards.
But what if you win? A free drink from the bargirl? Well often that is not so immediately and then I just pull out the wallet. And let's do another round.
Btw we sometimes visit beer bar. As a couple, the nightlife is not much on site.
Always cosy. And you will usually be invited again for a birthday pizza or bbq.
