Chiangmai – Amsterdam: It was no longer possible to continue booking (readers' submission)
I could no longer book my flight from Chiangmai to Amsterdam.
Previously, I always bought a separate ticket from Chiangmai to Bangkok and my luggage and myself were then immediately booked through to Amsterdam, as long as it was not with a budget airline. But Bangkok Airways no longer wanted to do that because of COVID-19. It was only possible if it was booked as a connecting flight.
This was a big deal as I only had 1 hour 20 minutes in Bangkok. Fortunately, Bangkok Airways had contacted EVA Air and they were waiting for me to quickly guide me through the obstacle course. From now on I leave at least 3 hours between the two flights.
Things change in Thailand sometimes.
If it is two separate tickets, most companies have not wanted to continue booking for 10 years.
Even if you fly Business Class with, for example
KLM then this will be refused. All kinds of fallacies
are called. They want you to buy a very expensive connecting ticket instead of a cheap single ticket.
Never a problem with Thai airways so far. But now there are mainly Thai Smile flights and that is budget.
I assume this is about the luggage. With 2 separate tickets I have never heard that this was possible!? Also seems illogical to me.
It is true what Tak says, it has not been possible to continue booking for about 10 years. You must have purchased the flights at the same time to get through booking. For 10 years my wife was very angry with me because there was no booking through at Schiphol, while I was used to this as an experienced traveler.
I do wonder how you could book through if you don't have an onward flight. They need to know from the airline with which flight number they have to send the luggage onwards. The fact that it is not possible with low-cost flights is due to the fact that they do not include luggage in their ticket price, only hand luggage.
After all, it is wise to observe 3 hours between two flights from now on. You can count yourself very lucky that you haven't missed a flight yet. An hour and a half between 2 flights is extremely tight, the slightest delay and you already bet a price.
Dear Addie,
I have already experienced several times that with connecting flights there is simply a wait in case of a delay.
For example, I once had to wait an additional 2 hours in Abu Dhabi because the flight from Paris was delayed. Just imagine that the more than 100 passengers from Paris to Bangkok get stuck in Abu Dhabi because their flight to Bangkok has already left. Chaos trumps.
When Lao airlines still flew to BKK from savannaket, I could just continue labeling if I had the flight number of the connecting flight. However, I had to leave within 24 hours of arriving in BKK. From Amsterdam back to Laos no problem either
Bangkok Airways, the airline in question here, has stopped 'labelling' long before the Covid vicissitudes when separate tickets are involved. I remember being confronted with it back in 2017 when checking in to Chiang Rai (which they don't fly to anymore).
