Pom Prap Sattru Phai a district in Bangkok

Every fortnight I print the programming of BVN. The BVN website has been adapted to the time difference between the Netherlands and Thailand, which is immediately visible. Top right: Thailand. Clicking through from the homepage to the guide confirms this again. Now with the announcement: Asia/Bangkok. However, there is a cryptic dot below that, which intrigues me every fortnight. It says: Environment: Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Thailand. What the hell is Pom Prap Sattru Phai?

Finally I can't contain my curiosity anymore. Google will of course bring results. Pom Prap Sattru Phai is one of the fifty districts in which Bangkok is divided. Pom means fortress. This fort was one of eight forts built by Rama V. The district with about 50.000 inhabitants is located in the middle of Bangkok and it is best located by mentioning a number of famous and worth visiting points.

And I do this because I notice that I have visited this neighborhood before and even wrote about it.

Because I avoid Bangkok as much as possible, I don't know many hotels. Normally I'm in the Pinnacle. Good, inexpensive and close to things I want to go to. For the Taaldictee I traveled with some friends and they had booked another hotel. The Prince Palace Hotel, right in Chinatown. The nice thing about this hotel is that it is located in a tower, of which floors eleven to thirty-two (minus thirteen) is a hotel, floors six to ten are parking garages and the bottom five floors are market. A clothes market.

That market continues outside, so that around the hotel there is a maze of streets, where cars can hardly pass each other because of the stalls, the porters, the restaurants and of course the customers. Everyone seems to be yelling, but it's all well-intentioned. If you want to get a good impression of Eastern street life, you should visit this market. The clothing trade inside is intended for wholesalers, so it is not possible to buy a single copy of a certain shirt. A dozen is reasonable. Ideal for me, because I spend as little time as possible on clothes. When I see a nice shirt and the merchant points out to me that I should take at least a six, I feel joy welling up in me. I've never bought so fast. Just choose different colors, that's doable for a colorblind person like me. The tower with the hotel is called Bo Bae Tower, the market Bo Bae Market.

GoldenMount

In the same district we find a famous temple. This golden temple on a mountain (Golden Mount) can be reached via stairs that run around the mountain and then you have a magnificent view at a height of 65 meters. Another famous temple is the Wat Mangkon Kamalawat.

King Prajadhipok Museum

An important museum can also be found in the district. The King Prajadhipok Museum is entirely dedicated to Rama VII.

Finally, I would like to mention the Ratchadamnoen Box Stadium. This is the second most famous stadium in Bangkok.

Too bad I don't know yet why BVN Pom Prap mentions Sattru Phai. Maybe there's a huge saucer there?
