Blog reader Peter Lenaers has traveled extensively through Asian countries, but has now been living in the Isan village of Ban Na So in the province of Bueng Kan for 14 years. He previously told a story about his friend playing a prank on lottery numbers (see episode 56) and now comes with an anecdote about eating his breakfast

This is the story of Peter Lenaers

The house lizard

Like every morning, I eat my breakfast outside on the balcony. Also one day when I was eating my omelette with a cup of coffee. At one point I saw that a piece of omelette had fallen next to my plate. At least that's what I thought, so I pick it up with the tip of my knife and pop it into my mouth.

That's not how an omelette should taste, I immediately thought, it tasted dirty and bitter and also warm. I looked around and up and, yes, there was the cause. It was a lizard, which I often see scurrying around, that had dropped a dropping.

I once again looked up and thought I saw the lizard give me another wink as a sign of "please". The animal even did the wink with two eyes at the same time.

It has not stopped me from having my breakfast on the balcony every morning. Only sometimes my neck hurts, because I keep looking up so as not to be surprised again with such an unwanted treat.

I've experienced something like that too.
The first time such a จิ้งจก (tsjîngchòk) had dropped a turd in my plate of food, the second time in my tea cup. And I'm afraid I will experience it more often.
    Bah!
