Els van Wijlen lives with her husband 'de Kuuk' on Koh Phangan. Her son Robin has opened a coffee cafe on the island.

Filming is happening at Bubba's Coffee Bar!

Rob Deelen and Martijn van der Sanden, the makers of the television program Brabant Worldwide, travel all over the world to film Brabant people who have emigrated. The popular program is broadcast via TV Brabant.

The way Rob and Martijn work is special, TV icon Ivo Niehe agrees. He has dedicated a broadcast to Rob and Martijn in his TV Show. Soon to be seen on TV.

“Our” Robin attracts the attention of Rob and Martijn.

Robin, the young enterprising Brabander, who leaves the small village of Wijk en Aalburg behind and goes on an adventure to Australia. There he works in the trendy coffee cafes in Melbourne and is trained as a barista. He also meets his great love, Somi from South Korea and one day they decide to go to Thailand together. He wants to start his own coffee bar on the tropical island of Koh Phangan. And it worked.
Since December 2015, Bubba's Coffee Bar has been around, which is frequented by locals and tourists because of its high quality, exceptional service, relaxed atmosphere and Brabant cosiness.

The makers of Brabant Worldwide find Robin's story worthwhile and decide to make an episode about him.

During the first very pleasant evening we get to know each other and we (Robin's parents) enthusiastically agree to a small interview. At most a few minutes of broadcast, so nothing special.

Today is the day. Really exciting though. At 7 o'clock the alarm goes off and I jump in the shower. I'm going through the past few days again…..what a lot I gave to be captured as cheaply as possible.

I swam laps up and down to Samui, drank liters of water, went to bed early, visited the beauty parlor and had my mustache removed. Barley grains were chipped, masks taken.

I epilated and smeared the best coconut oil on my crackle décolleté. A whole jar of anti-wrinkle cream was worked through and I removed hair wherever I could reach. I bleached my teeth, filed my nails and painted them very carefully…..all for a good cause. I took speech lessons to limit my Brabant accent a bit. And last but not least, I trained really hard so that I can hold my stomach in and talk at the same time.

I am ready!!!

Satisfied, I step out of the shower… and then I look in the mirror.

Waaatttttttt????????

I recoil! This is a disaster. An unavoidable drama has revealed itself. On my lip last night, out of nowhere, St. John from Den Bosch rose. A whopper of a cold sore like I've never had before.

I still try to pee over it, a golden tip from a good friend, but the result is dramatic.

After I've showered again and put on clean clothes I try to make the best of it. Then I'll get on the scooter….. With a bit of luck, the whole mess will blow off before I'm admitted to Bubba's Coffee Bar.

The broadcast will be in September 2017.

I always wonder with stories like this how a Dutchman (in this case with a Korean partner) can claim that he 'started his own coffee bar' (pretending to be the owner) when this is legally impossible unless with permission from the government (which actually only does this if it involves a significant investment in this country that provides employment to hundreds of Thai people).
Are laws being broken here or is the property 'arranged'? In both cases I would keep my mouth shut and never talk about my own coffee bar.
