King Bhumibol (85) had to cancel at the last minute for the festivities on the occasion of his 63rd coronation day.

Although his health seems to be improving lately, his doctors have advised against him leaving the hospital where he has been for several years. The monarch is struggling with the after-effects of pneumonia.

The king is the longest-serving monarch in the world. However, due to the king's weak health, he rarely appears in public. Despite this, he is still much loved by his Thai nationals.

Stroke Queen Sirikit

The health of Queen Sirikit (80) also leaves much to be desired. She suffered a stroke last year and since then has mostly avoided publicity.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn took his father's place at the ceremony in Bangkok. The prince was in Amsterdam with the popular princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn last week to attend the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander.
