The great media attention for the floods in the central and northern provinces and the threat to Bangkok might lead you to forget that the Isan, the northeast of Thailandrelated to flooding.

Of the 20 Isan provinces, 14 are experiencing flooding, albeit less severe than elsewhere in the country. The Moon River is the main culprit here.

Among the 14 affected provinces are important commercial and tourist places, including in Ubon Ratchatani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Roi Et, Chaiyaphum and Khon Kaen. The second army is standing by to provide assistance where necessary, said commander Thawatchai Samutsakorn.

A critical situation arose in the Phimai district (Nakhon Ratchasima) when the left wing of the Phimai dam collapsed and a crack of 8 by 4 meters appeared. While work was being done on the restoration, water had to be drained from the reservoir. After 3 hours the fracture was repaired. In the coming days, the water level in the reservoir will rise by 20 cm, because the water level in the Moon is rising.

In Non Sung district (Nakhon Ratchasima), 200 houses and thousands of rai farmland were flooded. Residents have been advised to take their belongings to a higher floor and prepare for evacuation.

Four major reservoirs in Nakhon Ratchasima province have exceeded their maximum capacity. One, Lam Tak Hong Chakkarat, as well as Lam Chiangkrai river basins, are already flooding and inundating nearby residential areas. The other three reservoirs are Lam Phraphloeng, Lam Moon Bon and Lam Chae. Residents in the Lam Chiangkrai basin are facing a shortage of sandbags.

In the province of Surin, nine districts with 14.000 families have been declared a disaster area.
