Geraldine travels to the Thai region of Isaan. A piece of Thailand where the mighty Mekong River determines life and traditions are honored.

The northeastern Thai region of Isan covers a third of the country, but is a blind spot on the map of Thailand for many travelers. Still, this part is worth visiting. Here you will find a part of Thailand where traditions are honored. The Isaan Thai are very proud of their region, speak their own language and have their own typical temples. They are also known for their spicy cuisine3opreis

The region is best known for its spectacular nature with mountains, national parks and impressive temples. Be sure to visit Chiang Khan, in the far north of the province, where it is bursting with hip bed & breakfasts and shops. This place is therefore popular among travelers. Moreover, this is a fairly cool area, as it can often cool down to about 10°C in the summer.

A bike ride through the Thai countryside is also worthwhile, making your way through rubber plantations and rice fields. Dive into Pha Taem National Park, one of the least visited national parks in Thailand. Read: rest… Great views over the Mekong River. You will also find prehistoric stone paintings that date back to 1000 BC. The Phanom Rung Historical Park and the temple complex of Muang Tam are also worth a visit.

Food

Isaan's cuisine is characterized by chili peppers, lime, peanuts, dried shrimp, fresh fruits and vegetables, glutinous rice, coriander, mint and other spices. Typical dishes are gai tod (fried chicken), gai yang (grilled chicken) and som tam (spicy papaya salad).
