Reader Submission: Used clothes for charity

Dear readers,

Several times I saw a question about what to do with used clothes in Thailand. There are some foundations in Bangkok that accept used clothes, household items and toys. In fact, they accept everything.

These foundations are not easy to track down because the websites are only in Thai. I myself have good experience with the Foundation For The Better Life of Children. They not only accept children's clothes, but also fold and fold clothes for adult men. What they do not use themselves, they send to other foundations. There is a whole network of such foundations. Clothes and smaller items can also be sent by post.

Foundation for the Better Life of Children

Who they help: Underprivileged children.
How they help: They house children and accept donations such as food, stationary and toys, as well as more essential everyday items like clothes, shoes and toothbrushes.
How can you get involved: Donate any of these items.

I think this is a good message, including the address that everyone should do.
It's quite disappointing if you have to figure it out during your 16-day vacation.
    Thanks Hudion

I have bad experiences with collecting 'used clothing', because often it needs to be washed at the very least. I therefore only do this in very exceptional cases. It is better to buy clothing from South Korea and Japan in bales at the Rong Kluea market in Aranyaprathet, where all second-hand clothing sellers in Thailand also buy their wares.

The clothing is packed in large bales, washed, usable, sorted by type & age group, and almost always of excellent quality (especially the Japanese bales). Transportation to any destination in Thailand is good & cheap. Over the years I have bought at least 100 of those bales, also with winter clothing, mainly for Burmese migrants in northern Thailand.

New clothing is also for sale there; no blankets (or bedspreads, but not recommended). A huge business in 'Aran' in which thousands of people work. The bales come in large heavy carts across the Cambodian border (Poipet), at the same place where busloads of Thais with big money cross the border to the 2 large casinos just across the border. Go check it out!
