Dear Martin,

A few months ago I approached you to ask your opinion about an X-ray of my lungs. At the time, the doctor in the hospital determined that it was not cancer, but pneumonia and now bronchitis.

I recently had another x-ray taken because I feel like my lung capacity is much less than it was two years ago. The doctor said there was nothing wrong, but I see that the 'white' spot in the photo has gotten bigger. For example, I notice that I have difficulty cycling on hilly routes, something I could do before. Downhill goes well, but uphill I have to get off and walk.

Dr. Maarten, would you please look at the photos and give advice if possible? (I did not send the old X-ray photo.) The two recent photos will be sent separately to thailandblog.nl.

Question 2.

A few months ago I also approached you after a fall on my leg that has an implant. You and the doctor here found no fracture. A plaster cast was then applied in the hospital. This had to remain in place for a week, followed by another week of bed rest. Then I started walking with a walker, then with a cane, until I was finally able to walk indoors without a cane.

What I then noticed while walking with the walker was a pain from my hip that extended to my knee. That is largely over now. Someone suggested it was a hamstring injury and that it could take up to four months before I was pain free. What is your opinion about this?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and respond to this message.

Regards,

J.

Dear J,
If by the white spot in the photo you mean the heart shadow and if it has indeed become larger, it is time to visit a cardiologist, as I have advised before. If you have swollen legs (ankles) at the end of the day, that is one more reason.
In the photo, the heart shadow is too large and the aortic arch is too extensive, which can indicate, among other things, high blood pressure.
Compared to the September photo, the heart shadow does indeed appear larger. The second photo is a positive of the first. Smart, because then you can see the pulmonary vessels better.
Indeed, a hamstring problem can last a long time, but I cannot say whether that was the cause of the pain. I wouldn't worry too much about that, because, as is often the case, many ailments go away on their own.
Sincerely,
Dr. Maarten
