Dear Martin,

I suffer from nail fungus, what can I do about it?

Thanks for your good advice.

Greetings,

E.

Dear E,

Onychomycosis, or nail fungus, is often the result of an underlying cause such as diabetes, vascular problems, communal showers, walking barefoot, etc.

With zero data it is difficult to give good advice. Here's a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvzMrhxvMXo

Once again I would therefore like to ask anyone who has a question to send as much information as possible to enable me to give the best possible advice. The well-known list is always in the beginning of this question section.

Thanks for the picture.

The only way to properly treat fungal nails is to take pills against the fungus for a longer period of time. Because these pills can cause side effects, it is best to take them as pulse therapy. For example Itraconazole capsules of 100 mg. 2x daily 2 capsules with or after food for 7 days. Then 3 weeks nothing, 1 week take 3 weeks nothing and take another week. Total 84 capsules.

A clear effect can take up to a year, depending on the speed of nail growth. If there are healthy nails after a year, it has worked. Unfortunately that is not always the case.

Also ensure good foot hygiene. See also: www.ipfh.org/foot-care-essentials/how-to-practice-good-foot-hygiene

Fortunately, socks are superfluous in this climate. That hurts again.

Good luck,

Dr. Maarten
