Dear Martin,

I am 66 years old, lead a healthy and sporty life, walk about three hours a day and go to the gym every day. I have been living in Jomtien for a little over a year now.

In October 2020 I underwent an ablation at the AZG in Groningen due to cardiac arrhythmias, also known as pulmonary vein isolation in medical jargon. Since then I haven't had any problems. However, many drugs were prescribed:

  • 2x daily Sotalol 40 mg
  • 1x Spironolactone 12,5
  • 1x Furosemide 40mg
  • 1x Perindopril 2mg
  • 1x Xarelto 20mg

A few months ago I contacted a cardiologist from the Bangkok Pattaya hospital because I want to stop taking these medicines. I feel healthy. The cardiologist agreed. In the meantime I only take 1x Sotalol 40 mg and 1x a so-called baby aspirin.

Several heart films were made and blood tests were performed. Everything is fine. Now my question: I am running out of Sotalol 40mg. I have visited several pharmacies to order this, but without success. Is this drug available in Thailand at all? If so, where can I get it? If not, what is a good alternative?

Thank you for taking the time to read my entire story.

Regards,

H.

Dear h,

According to my data, Sotalol is simply available in Thailand, but hey, you never know. Maybe they have it under the name Sotacor.
Replacements are Bisoprolol 1.25mg once a day starting with 1mg and possibly increasing to 1,25mg, depending on the pulse rate (5-60 at rest) and atenolol 70mg.

It is best to switch to another medication under the guidance of the doctor.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maarten
