The green-headed trogon (Harpactes oreskios) is a species of bird in the family Trogons (Trogonidae). Funnily enough, the bird is called in English: The Orange Breasted Trogon. But both are correct, the bird has a green head and an orange breast.

This Trogon is a bird species from the Trogonidae family and has 5 subspecies, these subspecies are also found in Thailand. It is a colorful, sedentary species that lives in the lower canopy of the lowlands and forests of southern China, Southeast Asia, Borneo, Sumatra and Java.

The Green-headed trogon is a medium-sized bird measuring between 25-31 cm in length and weighing about 49-57 g. The males have a dull olive-yellow head and a reddish-brown color that extends to the top of the tail. The birds have a blue eye ring.

The females have a more grey-brown head and upperparts, a gray breast with yellow on the belly and vent. Both sexes have gray feet with two toes pointing backwards, a common trait in trogons.

The species is insectivorous. Adults breed between January and May, excavating their nests in dead tree stumps. Both parents work together in raising the chicks.

A beautiful bird..but I thought that the number of trogons drastically declined in Thailand due to the decline of their natural habitat…a shame really….
