The pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris) is a hornbill native to India and Southeast Asia.

The pied hornbill is about 75 cm long. The back, neck and head are black, the belly is white and the underside of the tail is white except for the middle tail feathers. In flight, the bird has black wings with a white border (the tips of the hand and arm feathers). The top of the tail is black. The pied hornbill is distinguished from the black hornbill by black spots on the "horn" of the upper beak, white belly and white edging on the wings, and white undertail.

The bird's food consists of wild figs, other fruits and also small lizards, frogs and large insects.

The pied hornbill is found in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, Myanmar, Thailand, Malacca, Greater Sunda Islands, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. The habitat is humid lowland rainforest and secondary forest from zero to 1200 m above sea level.

A beautiful bird. I saw one for the first time during my vacation a few weeks ago. Not in a jungle but west of Hua Hin in a small village, where he came to score fried banana at a stall on the market. According to the saleswoman, he comes to get breakfast from her every morning when she is there.

I have a nice picture of it that I would attach if I could.

      What a fun story!
I love markets and would like to see this special bird in real life.
I will be back in Hua Hin at the beginning of February and would like to visit this market.
Can you indicate where and in what place this market is located?
      Thank you in advance.

    Hi Marcel,

No guarantee that you will see him, but he is a regular guest. And it is a long drive, in Nong Phlap on the main road from Hua Hin to the Pala-U waterfalls. Shortly before the only intersection in the village with the other through road. About 30 km before the falls.

There is no real market but a row of stalls on the left side of the road. 1 small stall is included with fried banana and sweet potato. They are not there every day, at least on Mondays, I can see from the date of my photo.

    Suc6, Arnold
