Home » Expats and retirees » Stichting GOED: MijnOverheid log in with DigiD app or SMS verification
From 5 January 2023 you can only log in to MijnOverheid with the DigiD app or SMS verification. This means that from now on you will always need a telephone when logging in.
For some people this will mean that they have to apply for a new DigiD. This is now also possible via video calling.
If you do not yet have a DigiD App, an old telephone number or no number linked yet, check what you need to do at NetherlandsWorldwide. This way you will not be faced with surprises. Share this one information video to draw the attention of more Dutch people abroad.
On November 8, 2022, another DigiD Citizen Panel took place in which Stichting GOED participated. The DigiD citizen panel conducts various user surveys into the accessibility of DigiD. We have asked that Dutch nationals abroad also be involved in this in the future.

SMS sometimes take a very long time or even not come at all. I use true.
SMS sometimes end up in the spam filter
I had my app on my phone but it no longer works.
I have already applied for support in the Netherlands.
You indicate that when you log in with the DigiD app you will receive a message that the PIN code you entered is incorrect.
If your pin code no longer works, this can have various causes.
You entered the PIN incorrectly.
You have deactivated the DigiD app via My DigiD.
Several people have tried to activate the DigiD app on the same device, as a result of which the pin code no longer matches.
The DigiD app must be reactivated. You do this as follows;
Open the DigiD app.
Choose Forgot PIN.
Select Reactivate and follow the instructions.
This is the answer from [email protected] to my question how people without a mobile phone can log in with DigiD from 5-1-'23:
“Dear Mr. TheoB,
You have a question about logging in from January 5, 2023.
The DigiD app is the easiest way to log in securely. This way your personal data is even better protected. You don't need to remember a password. Only a PIN that you choose yourself.
MijnGovernment wants to be sure that your data is only shared with you. Therefore, from January 5, 2023 you will no longer be able to log in with just your username and password.
Don't have a smartphone or tablet?
Then you can also log in with an SMS check. You will then receive an SMS code on your mobile phone. Or opt for a spoken SMS code. You can also receive this on a fixed telephone. You will then be automatically called on your landline and receive a spoken SMS code.
Can't log in with your DigiD?
Do you need information that is on MyGovernment? Then you can directly contact the organization where the information comes from.
Do you not have a DigiD app or SMS check and do you live abroad?
You can choose to request a new DigiD. If you live abroad, a new DigiD is provided with SMS verification as standard. As soon as you have activated your DigiD, you can activate the DigiD app by means of the SMS check.

Thanks TheoB for sharing this comment. It is no problem for me to log in to DigiD via the app, but in practice I notice that relatively speaking, a fairly large number of seniors and non-native speakers do have difficulty with it. Mainly because the DigiD app sometimes has to be reset with login name, password and confirmation with SMS code. Not everyone knows where to find the SMS code, especially if you only use one mobile phone. Others forget to pass on the change to DigiD when changing the SIM card with the Dutch telephone number to a Thai number and can therefore no longer receive text messages. Progress is not for everyone.
