Elections for the European Parliament will be held on 23 May 2019. Dutch nationals abroad can vote in these elections. If you want to do that, register online with the municipality of The Hague before 11 April 2019.

Every 5 years there are elections to the European Parliament. Then you choose the Dutch candidates for the new parliament. So you vote for a Dutch political party. The political groups in the European Parliament are composed differently than in the House of Representatives: they consist of candidates from the various EU member states (with 1 political colour).

You can vote abroad

Do you have Dutch nationality and do you live abroad? Then you can vote for these elections. You do have to register online. You can also authorize someone to vote for you in the Netherlands.

How does voting work abroad?

Register no later than April 11, 2019 at the website of the municipality of The Hague. You only have to do that once. You will then receive a postal vote certificate or a voter's pass by post for each election. You can vote with that. It's simple: send your vote to the address on the return envelope. Make sure that you send the postal ballot paper in time: well before May 23, 2019. Then your vote will arrive on time.

If you want to authorize someone in the Netherlands to vote for you, this person will be sent a proxy card. This allows him or her to vote on your behalf at a Dutch polling station.

Any idea why it is not possible to vote for the Provincial Council and therefore indirectly for the Senate? You could place all NL people in a separate 'abroad' province ...
