On Tuesday, May 4, the traditional commemoration of the dead due to the COVID-19 pandemic will take place in an adapted form. That day, the embassy, NVT, NTCC and Thailand Business Foundation will lay wreaths at the flag on the embassy compound. Afterwards, between 15 and 17 p.m., the embassy offers interested parties the opportunity to come by for an individual moment of commemoration, and possibly to lay flowers themselves.

Visitors are requested to wear a face mask in line with the applicable COVID measures and to keep a sufficient distance from others.

From next year, on the day of National Remembrance Day, May 4, the ceremony will be organized at the two war cemeteries in Kanchanaburi. In close consultation between the embassy, NVT, NTCC and the Thailand Business Foundation, it has been decided that the national commemoration of the dead will then take place at the place where so many Dutch war victims have their final resting place.

The ceremony will also take shape in the coming years with a speech by the ambassador, last post, national anthem and wreath laying by the embassy and Dutch organizations in Thailand. The commemorations of 15 August organized by the embassy will then take on a different character, with an emphasis on online commemoration and continuing to draw attention to history. The embassy maintains good contacts with the 15 August 1945 Foundation, the War Graves Foundation and the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, to support such initiatives.

Incidentally, the embassy grounds in Bangkok will also be opened on May 4 to those interested who do not have the opportunity to travel to Kanchanaburi, so that they can reflect on the war victims there.
