From January 17 to Sunday, January 19, a festival will take place in Bo Sang (Chiang Mai province), which is dedicated to the special umbrellas and parasols that are made there.

The origins of the festival go back more than a hundred years. The legend of the colorful umbrellas is about a Buddhist monk who traveled to Burma. There he learned how to make the paper umbrella that would protect him from the sun on his journey back to Bo Sang village.

Once back, he passed on his skills to the villagers. Now the knowledge is passed on from generation to generation. The proceeds from the sale of these umbrellas became an important source of income for the villagers and they soon started exporting in and out of Thailand.

An annual festival is now held to honor the legend and show the world the wonderful creations one is capable of. During the festival, the village is decorated with the umbrellas and parades are held.
