If you have a sweet tooth like me, you can certainly get your money's worth in Thailand. When you walk on the street or visit a market you will come across plenty of delicacies.

Thai banana and chocolate crepes, also known as “Roti Gluay”, are a delicious and tasty treat that you absolutely must try when you are in Thailand. This delectable dessert combines the softness of crêpes with the sweetness of bananas and the rich taste of chocolate, offering a unique taste experience you won't soon forget.

What are Thai crepes?

Thai crêpes, or "roti," are thin, fluffy pancakes made from a simple batter of flour, water, sugar, and eggs. These pancakes are often filled with sweet or savory ingredients, making them suitable for both main courses and desserts.

The combination of bananas and chocolate

Bananas and chocolate are a classic combination that is loved in many desserts around the world. Thai banana and chocolate crêpes use ripe bananas, which provide a natural sweetness and smooth texture. Chocolate sauce or melted chocolate is added for an extra touch of rich flavor.

Method of preparation of Thai crepes with bananas and chocolate

The preparation of this dessert starts with baking the roti. The batter is spread thinly on a hot griddle and fried on both sides until golden brown. Banana slices are then placed on the crepe, after which the chocolate sauce is poured over it. The crêpe is then folded or rolled up and sometimes baked on the baking tray to heat the ingredients properly.

Variations and toppings

While bananas and chocolate are a popular filling, many other variations are possible. Consider, for example, mango, pineapple, or even savory options such as chicken or vegetables. As for toppings, you can experiment with powdered sugar, condensed milk, or even a scoop of ice cream.

Occasionally I order a crepe (banana pancakes) as shown in the video below. They are delicious and you can choose several types of toppings including jam or chocolate spread. Very sweet and powerful but tasty.

The crepe is made for you while you wait and costs only 20 – 30 baht (about 50 cents). Just try it once.

Also known as roti, which can also be found in NL through Surinamese cuisine.

Rotti is a Hindustani pancake, which is offered everywhere in Thailand, because of the many Hindustani living there. It comes in many varieties.
The same applies in the Netherlands: It is sold in many places by the Surinamese Hindustanis.
It's definitely not Khanom Bolaan Thai, of which there are dozens of varieties. Available everywhere.

As far as I'm concerned, a delicious snack, but with only banana, so without topping (which I find much too sweet). Enjoy fresh from the plate, because then it is crispy. After a short time, the dough will become a bit tough.

This video is from January 27, 01. In the countryside you can still buy this delicacy for ฿2013, but in the shopping district of Bangkok it costs easily ฿20 these days.

Very tasty, but nothing Thai about it. Ate this 20 years ago in Japan…
