The Similan Islands consist of nine islands and are located in the Andaman Sea about 55 kilometers west of Khao Lak. A particularly beautiful place for everyone who loves fairytale tropical beaches. In addition, the Similan Islands are famous for the beautiful underwater world.

The area is protected and tourists can only visit it for a few months a year. You can visit these special islands from October 15 to May. Koh Similan is the largest island. The sea in the area has an average depth of 60 feet. Underwater you can see enchanting rock formations and coral reefs in different. Above water, the islands also offer a special flora and fauna with rare animals.

You can dive in many places in the park. Most places can be found at the 6 islands north of Koh Miang. As a diver you are not allowed to come to the south of the park. By the way, you have to book a diving tour because independent diving is not allowed.

Diving and snorkeling

The Similan Islands are in the top 10 best diving destinations in the world. The diving here is overwhelming. Vibrant reefs, beautiful corals, impressive fan corals and an incredible variety of marine life including large ocean fish such as manta rays and whale sharks. For Jacques Cousteau (the famous underwater archaeologist) these islands were one of his favorite destinations.

Richelieu Rock is incredibly rich in marine life. Here you can see seahorses, moray eels, lionfish, different species of rays and schools of pennant fish. Because of its open water location, you can also see ocean fish such as barracuda, mackerel and tuna here.

The Similan Islands are characterized by gigantic boulders above and below the waterline, which provide great underwater vistas, ideal for divers and snorkelers. The water is crystal clear and the visibility is more than perfect. The Similan Islands also have beautiful sandy beaches and shallow coral reefs in the bays, which are excellent for snorkeling.

    Diving in Similan Islands,
Three years ago we, 3 experienced divers, visited the series of islands on a life-aboard. To be honest, we were not impressed with naval life. Apart from a few manta rays it was just usual stuff for a tropical country. Overall we had much better diving experiences in Mindoro.
As far as beaches and snorkeling are concerned, the experience will be more positive. We did not visit the beaches,

M curious! Coincidentally, I am planning to visit next week. We live in the far north and wanted to go to the beach for a few days. My daughter came up with these islands, they seem beautiful.
