Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is an idyllic island in the Andaman Sea. It is the southernmost Island of Thailand and is about 60 kilometers away from the coast of Satun province.

The island is part of the Adang-Rawi archipelago. This archipelago, together with the Tarutao archipelago, forms the Koh Tarutao National Park. Even though Koh Lipe is part of a national park, the residents are allowed to further develop parts of the island.

Of the Adang-Rawi archipelago, only the island of Koh Lipe is inhabited. It is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches, good snorkeling and diving sites, beautiful sunrises and sunsets and the pleasant mild climate. There are more than twenty resorts on Koh Lipe. It is expected that this number will continue to grow.

Pattaya Beach is the main beach on Koh Lipe. It is a large sheltered bay with soft powdery sand, crystal clear blue water. You can snorkel well from the beach. Sunrise Beach (Hat Chao Ley) and Sunset Beach (Hat Pramong) are the other beaches of interest. Accommodations can also be found on these three beaches, from beach huts to hotel rooms with air conditioning.

Thailand blog tip: “The Mirror Lake”

A hidden gem in the Andaman Sea, Koh Lipe is known for its crystal clear waters, soft sandy beaches and a laid-back atmosphere that attracts many. But there is a virtually unknown facet of this island that escapes most visitors – and even some locals. Hidden in the denser greenery of the island, away from the well-known paths, lies a small, almost magical lake surrounded by dense vegetation known as “The Mirror Lake” (a fictional name for the context of this story).

This lake is unique for its extremely clear and calm waters that reflect the surrounding landscape so perfectly that it is difficult to distinguish where the water ends and the sky begins. The lake is not easy to find and it is rumored that only a select few locals know its exact location. They believe that the lake has special healing powers and use the water for traditional rituals.

Another special feature of Het Spiegelmeer is the rare type of luminous plankton that can be found in the water. This plankton lights up with minimal disturbance, turning the lake into a twinkling starry sky on Earth at night. This natural light show is a breathtaking spectacle that almost no one gets to see.

The road to Mirror Lake is an adventure in itself, requiring one to trek through dense forest, along hidden paths rarely trodden by tourists. The existence of this lake is a closely guarded secret, often only shared with those who have a deep appreciation for nature and are willing to respect the serene beauty of Koh Lipe's lesser-known side.
