Thai film 'Mundane History' on Dutch TV

We don't see that every day: around midnight Nederland 2 shows 'Mundane History', a film gem from Thailand.

The film shows the story of a young man confined to his wheelchair. Only the walks with his nurse give him some distraction in his boring life with his grumpy father.

Director Anocha Suwichakornpong used that simple story as a metaphor for the political situation in her homeland, but don't worry if you didn't spot it.

Anocha Suwichakornpong says: “I had to deliver my political message very carefully because of the strict censorship in Thailand. In 2006, the army staged a coup d'état, in which the democratically elected Prime Minister Thaksin was exiled. The broken relationship between the father and son in 'Mundane History' reflects the tense relationship between the authorities and Thai citizens.”

Halfway through the film you suddenly break off that story and we are shown images of the cosmos and of a birth. Are they also part of your political message?

Suwichakornpong: “Yes, just like the main character's monotonous life, human and cosmic life also follow a cyclical pattern. These cycles symbolize the cycle that has gripped Thai politics for the past fifty years: a coup is committed every fifteen years.”

Your film won a prize at the Rotterdam Film Festival. Did he also find his way to the public in Thailand?

Suwichakornpong: “Yes, although people are not allowed to see him there until they are over 20. Agreed, there are some nude scenes in it, but the committee can also censor films 'because they harm national security'. (laughs) Pretty vague, huh.”.

The film can be seen on Ned 2 | Friday, August 16 | 23.50:XNUMX pm

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately a bit late and I don't have any equipment to record it. I'll definitely watch the beginning and then we'll see if we copy it or crawl into the suitcase in time to make a nice trip with my girlfriend tomorrow.

Nice tip, thanks, just a pity that it already aired last night, but who knows, maybe it will come by sometime.

I guess it's like last time with that movie about the ladyboys
Waited for that and it didn't air.
Tonight there is a film about Rowanda entitled “Sometimes in April” on Nederland 2 from 23:30 PM – 01:39 AM.
So this movie is not scheduled

Oh I now see that the TB of August 17 passes on the TV schedule of August 16
    Nice and late.

    mistake, thanks

Too bad I also had to miss the movie. I receive the TB every morning around 10am. In this case, too late for the movie. I have noticed that sometimes there are already reactions, now also one from last night from Rob V. at 19:02. How is that possible?

Pretty simple, the email shows the articles that appeared on TB the day before, that's been the case for 4 years.

On the website, of course. TB is not a newsletter, but a website.

I speak to many people who wait until they have a message from Thailandblog to read it.
These miss many comments due to the enormous growth of the blog .
When getting up, in between and before going to sleep, something changes every time, so that the blog is up to date all day.
So just so you don't miss anything, click every now and then.

I think the TB is a very good and pleasant site, from which I have obtained a lot of information.
But you don't always go to the site to read the news, then you expect TB to provide the correct information in the email and if the broadcast has already taken place, you do not put the announcement in the email.
It creates an expectation that is not there.

I hope this comment gets posted.

    best regards
