Only a year ago I felt I had ended up in a musical desert in Jomtien. Sure, you had a few recitals per season at Ben's and the annual guitar festival in Pattaya, but that was it. For the rest you had to go to Bangkok.

For chamber music to the Goethe-Institute or the Siam Society and for orchestral music and opera to the TCC or the National Theatre. It was rumored that Mahidol University had high-level music played by an orchestra, but that was impossible because it took five hours or more to get there from here. In short, musically it was biting on a stick.

Suddenly that changed. Last year, the Sala Sudasiri Sobha opened its doors in Bangkok: twice a month chamber music at a high level in a beautiful small hall and at a great time for us, namely Sunday afternoon 16.00 pm. At the end of last year, Gregory Barton started his acclaimed chamber music series in Nong Plalai. Several times a month chamber music in an intimate atmosphere within reach for us, Pattayans, by an international group of top musicians! Only lovers of orchestral music did not get their money's worth yet.
That has now also been resolved. A beautiful concert hall was officially opened on the campus of Mahidol University in Bangkok West this month: the Prince Mahidol Hall.

An impressive building with an auditorium for XNUMX visitors, played by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO), the best symphony orchestra in the country. Below is a photo impression of the building and hall.
It all looks beautiful and the orchestra sounds great.

The journey from Pattaya does not take five but only two and a half to three hours and there is a matinée on Saturday afternoon at 16.00 pm. There's a van with music lovers departing from here at 11.00am. At 13.30:14.00-16.00:20.45 they arrive on campus and they then have two hours to have lunch in the excellent and extremely cheap restaurant there. The concert starts at 700 p.m. and the van will be ready afterwards. We will be back in Pattaya at approximately XNUMX:XNUMX PM. Costs (transport and ticket, excluding lunch): about XNUMX baht!! There is a different program on average twice a month.
