Many tourists and expats, also of Dutch origin, complain now and then about the way they are treated by the Thai government (immigration, police). Often it is about the lack of clarity of rules, but much more about the application of the rules: arbitrariness, differences in interpretation, lack of empathy and flexibility when a little extra is paid. Tourists and expats seem to have no rights. They are not, but which tourist or expat goes to the Thai court if he/she is wronged?

The violation of individual rights seems to be a general trend and is not limited to Thailand or the Netherlands. In some countries it has become so commonplace that people don't know any better and have found a solution to it instead of protesting against it. Think of the destruction of the homes of Palestinians convicted in Israel, in violation of international law.

I wrote this posting to make people aware that something similar could actually happen; and that it is important to keep thinking about restrictions on individual rights regardless of political affiliation.

As of October 15, Dutch tourists will no longer be allowed in Thailand.

It was already a thorn in the side of the Thai government that Dutch people with a foreign-sounding surname (also Thai-sounding, with high and low tone) were discriminated against in the child benefit affair. Dozens of families fell victim to the policy and have still not been compensated.

The way in which the Dutch government has dealt with the farmers' protests cannot be approved either. The fact that the Dutch army has not been deployed to break up the roadblocks (the Netherlands is a container country par excellence) is incomprehensible to the Thai government. Since many Dutch people remained silent, the Thai government assumes that they support government policy in this regard.

According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok, the ban will not apply to wappies. They must be able to demonstrate that they already criticized the Dutch government on Facebook before January 1, 2020.

    Chris, you're a little confused?
It is almost September 1, but not yet April 1.

  2. Ingo says up

    Is this a joke?

  3. Paul. Jomtien says up

I do hope that you will also be admitted to this exemplary non-democratic country if you can prove that you are a member of FVD, PVV or one of those right-wing radical splinter parties. And maybe a VVD membership is enough?

  4. Erik says up

Only wappies left? Have a look to be sure what wappie stands for.

'It indicates a queer state of mind in which one has lost one's way, or a queer person, a delusional spirit or 'crazy'.

Am I now allowed to think that emigrants and expats of NL origin in Thailand have been nothing but wappies for decades? Am I just glad to be gone….

    • Chris says up

Since the day I was called a wappie for standing up for my healthy elderly mother of 92 who was locked up in her apartment in the retirement home against her will and without any consultation during the Covid period, I have taken that designation as a compliment .
Fortunately, my sister had a key to the side entrance and could visit my mother as often as she wanted, but against all rules.

  5. Tino Kuis says up

Completely justified what the Thai government is doing here!

I have long believed that the Dutch should not travel to Thailand and should not live and work there. The Thai government is illegitimate, suppressing freedoms such as speech, activists for a better environment and more democracy are being killed, arrested and imprisoned! They are close friends with Myanmar and China. The police and army cannot be trusted.

    Stay out of that country!

    PS Sarcasm

    • Peter (editor) says up

Dear Tino, remember when I said that 80% of the population is not able to think independently? Read the comments…

  6. khun moo says up

It's very early for April 1 jokes.

Perhaps they have forgotten that Farangs with a non-Thai name have been discriminated against for years.

With 17 million inhabitants in our small country, we have 18 million larger livestock and 107 million chickens.

The farmers also realize that there is a problem, which has been going on for 50 years.
I think it is a good thing that our government is looking for a solution and not deploying the army.

Perhaps the latter is the reason for this decision.

    • Alphonse says up

We are bums in our mindset.
As if those 17 million Dutch people don't fart that are just as environmentally unfriendly as those of the cows.
Besides, we are almost 8 billion people on this planet… as if all those farts are innocent.
      We're not questioning that.
Because we consider ourselves the most important creatures on earth.
      To solve the problem?
Let's start cutting the world's population in half.
Give power to the cockroaches, at least they don't fart.

  8. khun moo says up

Presumably a response to some posts on these sites about some Thai government officials a few weeks ago.

That the reason could lie in the approach to the farmers' protests or the child benefits affair seems nonsense to me.
As if many Thai children with a Thai surname would stay in the Netherlands.
One thing is certain: the Thai families in Thailand, who are financially supported by the Dutch, are suffering.

  9. Adriaan says up

This seems like nonsensical reporting to me. Where is the official message about this?

  10. Jack S says up

What is this strange message? And a reference that I think has nothing to do with it. I cannot imagine that the Thai government is interested in what is happening in the Netherlands or in the rest of the world.

  11. Jan says up

What a nonsense message and also not funny at all after what has happened in the past 2 years, whether or not to travel to Thailand. If this is an attempt at sarcasm and/or humor then it has failed as far as I'm concerned.
    Regards Jan.

  13. Wim says up

You are 7 months early. April 1 is time to post this kind of nonsense.

Thailand is currently simply too expensive for countries that use the euro. Consequently, they simply exclude countries such as the Netherlands and hope for tourists from China and India.

The source citation does not match what is claimed.

To readers who come to believe this article and get stressed out, my request to either cite the source about this, or else to correct or delete this article in its entirety.

  22. willem says up

Are we then going to double the entrance fees for parks and attractions for Thai citizens in the Netherlands?

I understand that some take the article seriously. Apparently many people. Too bad for the group of readers who take a serious-looking message really seriously.

    ***Editors miss adding a disclaimer?***

  23. Mark says up

Good joke, but food for thought...

if you look at the source…. Russians who are denied a visa in the EU….
and then the many who agree with this,,, unimaginable…

That the message is not true is quite obvious, but imagine it happens to you…
oh wait a minute it's already happening… Russians who refuse become purely and simply because of their nationality…
If every Russian supports the war…

Good article that hopefully gives others a little more insight into the situation in which the Russians now find themselves.

I wonder if this was the intention of the joke… (and the source credit was purely coincidental)

  24. Ger Korat says up

The Dutch government immediately hit back and announced today that the AOW will be increased by 10% so that an even larger group of Dutch citizens will be eligible to stay in Thailand for a long time because of the increased income. An additional advantage is that more homes will become available in the Netherlands and less gas will be used because of the winter residents in Thailand. The Dutch state is also considering taking shares in Thai Airways just now that it has announced that it has scraped together a modest profit of EUR 2 million in the second quarter. This allows the exodus from the Netherlands to Thailand to be realized by means of extra flights, to govern is to look ahead. And thanks to the many Dutch people who use Thai Airways, the Dutch State can become a major shareholder in the Thai airline and take over the position of the Thai government for next to nothing.

    • Chris says up

Nice idea Ger, but those Dutch people just don't get in. Moving to Crimea could be a solution………….hahahahaha

  26. Jan says up

If Thailandblog continues to post this kind of messages then Thailandblog is no longer necessary for me.

  27. Gerrie says up

Let's keep this site serious. There's enough fake news already. It's a lame joke.

  28. Do says up

    I do not believe it…!

  29. Tino Kuis says up

This is a case of 'whataboutism'. If it is nonsensical that Thailand excludes Dutch tourists for the reasons mentioned, why should we deny entry to Russian tourists? So this is about Russia/the Netherlands/Europe and not about the Netherlands/Thailand. Poor Dutch people who are no longer welcome in Thailand, do we also do that to those poor Russians? Pathetic!

  30. Heidy says up

Searched the internet in both NL and ENG. Also looked at the site of the Thai Embassy in NL. There is nothing about the fact that Dutch people would no longer be welcome from 15.10.22. Moreover, in the article to which the link goes, the word Thailand is not even mentioned.
    Monkey sandwich story it seems.

  31. Corrie Deutz says up

HaHaHa. Received an email from TAT today that it is becoming increasingly easier for tourists to enter Thailand.
Nothing about keeping the Dutch out.

  32. Kristof says up

  33. Rob V says up

And if I become a member of the SP tomorrow, will a door open? Or should I move to Vietnam?

  34. sheng says up

Chris is definitely confused in my opinion! What I can make out is the following; if the Dutch government wants to ban citizens of a country like Russia from Europe, what is wrong with Thailand if it starts banning Dutch people? He quotes an article from NOS about a possible ban on VISA for Russian citizens. Citizens of a country engaged in a mad war on the outer borders of Europe. Where Europe tries to turn the tide with all possible means, sanctions, arms deliveries, etc. This Russian regime is just as careless (and in my opinion pernicious) compared to a Dutch government that has gone wrong with a surcharge policy. Then a farmers' protest is mixed in. Perhaps to reinforce the whole thing, that things are really wrong with the leadership in our country. And so according to Chris there is nothing wrong with the following; if the Netherlands wants to exclude Russian citizens, then there is nothing wrong with Thailand wanting to exclude Dutch citizens. This is what I can make out. Or is there something wrong with what Thailand does / wants? But then there is also something wrong with what the Dutch government does / wants !! Or does he want to point out that there is something wrong everywhere . . . pppffffff confusing times everyone. . . maybe I'm confused .. time for some relaxation, a holiday to Thailand for example !! 🙂 🙂

    Greetings sjeng

    • Chris says up

“What I can deduce from it is the following; if the Dutch government wants to ban citizens of a country like Russia from Europe, what is wrong with Thailand if it starts banning Dutch people?”
      No
If the Dutch government wants to ban citizens from a country like Europe (only because their government, not them, does things that the Netherlands disapproves of), is it conceivable that Thailand will ban Dutch tourists (who are not in the government) because the Thai government does not disagree with Dutch policy?
If one believes that one can confiscate the property of Russian oligarchs just because they are friends with Putin (and I do not think that is possible, let me be clear about that), then one also believes that all property of expats in Thailand , who tacitly support the current regime, can be taken away by a new red government??
Where is justice if you can be deprived of your basic rights without any form of accusation and justice: your opinion, your possessions?

      • He says up

A really twisted comparison. If the Netherlands invaded Belgium and bombed the civilian population there to play land grab, there would be something of a comparison. All sanctions that have been or will be imposed on Russia are imposed in the hope of preventing war casualties.
Whether they are effective or righteous is debatable, but to compare this with what Russia does I think (censorship)

  35. Alphonse says up

Unfortunately, Chris, irony won't get you very far. That figure of speech is completely out of the world.
However, it was used in the past to make people think…

You are actually proving that the same people who will be outraged by fake news just walk into fake news with their eyes closed.
There is no critical sense left in the heads at all.
    That promises for our future…

Incidentally, I see here again all those rotten thoughts of the 70s about democracy on our planet.
Democracy is a luxury item of those exceptional societies where everyone has too much money and wealth, consumes themselves madly and does not know what to do with their time.

If you're Myanmarese or Laotian and you have to fight every day for your meal, you don't care about democracy. If you earn 320 baht a day as a Thai, you have something else on your mind than the exempt and paid trade unionists in Europe.
Democracy is a product of wealth and social-financial-economic surplus. Unfortunately.
Unfortunately, because I wish every citizen of the world a world like ours.

  36. janschollart says up

    This isn't true, right?

Bah!! I think this is an inappropriate message and this shouldn't get through the screening. Does your last name Chris bother you? I hope you realize that this site is used to get good information about Thailand. And I don't think many people are waiting for your panic-mongering.
    Good luck with your behaviour.

It is incomprehensible that thailandblog accepts this kind of fake announcements. If I complain about something, my announcement is thrown off after 10 minutes. There will be plenty of people who will take these fakes for real

  38. PEER says up

    Chris,
Still, I always thought that this had been introduced years earlier and that I had to wriggle around to get to Thailand.
I must say that going to Thailand is a kind of penance.
In the past we had to go to confession and were given penance.
That's how I see it now: going to Thailand to do that fine!
I manage that quite well and have been forcing me to suffer 20 months a year in Thailand for 6 years.
So I will continue to suffer in Thailand for years to come, hahaaaaa
    Nice post!

  39. Alex says up

I do not understand that the editors of Thailandblog.nl post such a nonsense article!
There are always gullible people who believe this and worry!

  40. Lord says up

Well, I think you should pay more attention. The link refers to the proposal to no longer allow Russian tourists to enter the Netherlands. And also in a European context, Zelinski is said to have called for refusal of tourists coming from Russia. I think the editors of Thailandblog have published this variant with a chuckle. Because it seems to me a parody of what the Dutch government is doing.. You should know that many Russians only want one thing and that is to leave as soon as possible..
Thailand is not mentioned at all in the article referred to.

  41. willem says up

    Chris.

You are responding to an incorrect article. The EU has not decided at all to stop issuing tourist visas to Russians. It has only been decided to tighten the conditions.

Calm down, take a deep breath.

    Nothing wrong.

  42. Leo says up

I was shocked when I read this, but it was soon clear that this is a reference from our government that has lost its way lately and is involved in the most insane things such as war and destruction and our country to the buttons.
As icing on this demolition cake, they were at the forefront to vote against that Russians, so ordinary citizens, can no longer get a visa for the EU, if you as a Russian have a yacht or money that has already been stolen from you, it is a big sick bunch together, and the citizen pays the main price as always, just like we do now with the range of deliberately created crises that plague us.

By the way, I won't be surprised that the Thai government will ever decide to actually introduce something like this, they hold back so as not to fall too far out of the way diplomatically, but if they could have their way........

  43. William says up

Ha ha what reactions to a fictional story by Chris de Boer.
Unfortunately or maybe a good solution in some cases.
There just happens to be a piece in well-informed circles about passport blocking.

    The beginning of the end.

A day or so earlier a message about the fact that many people [about half] fall for fake news with open eyes.
Sorry, I lost track of where.
Thinking for yourself is becoming increasingly difficult in a democracy.

  44. Ronald says up

I find it strange that this was posted on this forum.
I assume that messages are more or less screened by the editors or forum leaders or am I mistaken?
The forum needs to keep up a little bit, right?

    • KhunTak says up

      Dear Ronald,
      what should that level be?
Should the editors discuss that first?
It is noticeable that when a message is posted, fake or not, it causes a lot of commotion.
As soon as it falls outside a certain frame, the finger comes.
Many have blind faith in the established media, but if even one person digs a little deeper and or continues to search, it's already a wappie.
      Very shortsighted.

I read many articles here with interest, very instructive often. But have absolutely no idea why such nonsense story is published here.
Because thailandblog is normally a serious medium, some will take it for granted with all its consequences. I can't find an ounce of hu or oid in it either.

  47. Michael W. says up

My compliments Chris, you have lured them out of their tent again. Love those Telegraaf-like comments, immediately dismissing the PVV and FvD as undemocratic while the cartel rumbles on without regard to the constitution.

  48. Hank Hauer says up

People believe fake news ha hs

  49. Carlos says up

    GOOD NEWS,
Now that Thailand has decided to support Russia (due to the absence of the tourist rubles),
With an investment of only $1 million, can you get a ten-year visa and show that you support Thailand!

  50. Johnny Prasat says up

Chris, you gave them a fright here, yet many of them are still asleep. So that's just a little bit of the feeling the Russians must be feeling right now. Continuing to arm Ukraine and see Putin and the Russians as the boogeyman is causing more and more deaths. Europe and the US have been given time, Russia has not suddenly crossed the border. Just scandalous, the way in which Europe is now busy destroying its civilian population. Putin is now giving a firm educational slap that we have been doing it wrong for a long time. Our politicians still don't want to understand. Thailand will not keep the Dutch out, but our own politicians will make it difficult for us to travel.
