Two Dutch soldiers walked 450 km along the Burma railway. They were completely self-sufficient on their journey and had to see where they would sleep. We made an article about it at the beginning of January, see www.thailandblog.nl/nieuws-nederland-belgie/twee-nederlanders-marcheren-als-eerbetoon-dodenspoorlijn-af

We were able to follow Emiel and Jesse on their journey on Facebook, where they also posted beautiful photos in addition to their report. Their (for now) last post on Facebook reads:

We made it!

“Last Thursday we visited the Mon Bridge. A day later it was time for some rest, as we were going to walk the last 20 km of the tour on Saturday. We did it, we made it!

It's been huge, really tough kilometers these past few weeks. We walked more than 350 km, which hurt our feet and our backs enormously. But if you compare it to the pain people suffered during the construction of the railway, then we can't complain!

It was a journey with a smile and a tear. Heavy and emotional days alternated. We could have walked a bit further, but the reason we don't go into Myramar is because it's not safe there yet. So that's the difference between being free and not being free.

We should therefore also be grateful that we have been living in freedom in the Netherlands for 75 years.

Lest we forget.”
