Crazy about gambling, that certainly applies to many Thai people. Superstition, a fascination with numbers and lucky numbers and the idea that you can influence your luck. Good karma should also help in the casino, right?

Gambling in Thailand goes way back in history, reaching as far back as the 10th century. At the time, a gambling game known as "counting beans" was very popular in Thai society. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Bangkok was known as a true gambling whalhalla. King Rama III legalized the existing casinos in 1830 in order to generate extra income for the treasury. To fund the country's participation in World War I, a lottery draw was organized by King Rama V. By the end of 1939, the lottery became legal and the Thai State Lottery was born.

In the XNUMXs, Thailand had a number of legalized state casinos overseen by the Ministry of Finance, but casino operators were only allowed to let wealthy players in to maximize tax revenue, and that's where things went wrong, as virtually everyone was admitted.

In order to steer the gambling drive in the right direction, gambling and card games are prohibited in Thailand. However, the penalties are not high, you can get a prison sentence of up to 1 year and/or a fine of ฿1000.

Unlike Thailand, you can simply go to legal casinos in the surrounding countries such as Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. A reason for many Thai people to go to the casinos in neighboring countries via the border towns, you can even pay with Thai Baht. Another possibility are the illegal casinos that you can find all over Thailand. The local hermandad turns a blind eye to paying some tea money.

A few years ago, a number of politicians suggested the idea of legalizing casinos in Thailand. It could give a huge boost to tourism. Bangkok and Pattaya were mentioned as possible locations for a casino. Legalizing casinos mainly brings many advantages, such as extra investments and tax revenue. Thailand is now losing revenue because gamblers visit neighboring countries where casinos have been built just across the border. If Thailand legalizes casinos, the idea is that it will attract tourists from home and abroad and that will be good for the Thai economy. Now it is mainly abroad that earns money from the gamblers.

Online casinos

With the advent of the internet, many Thais have de online casino discovers. Since there are no internet casinos based in Thailand, Thai on the internet visit foreign online casinos. It is estimated that Thais wager billions of USD annually in online casinos, sportsbooks and poker rooms. The Thai government is forcing ISPs to block a large portion of foreign online casinos, but many of them are still available online, for example with a VPN, and they serve thousands of Thai customers every day. The easy availability of online casinos with fast payouts make it very attractive to gamblers.

Online casinos in Thailand offer numerous options for safe withdrawals and/or deposits. Payment methods from major brands such as VISA and MasterCard are accepted at online casinos. Popular but lesser known methods such as Neteller and Skrill are also accepted. And to make things easy for local players, online casinos also accept popular Thai e-wallets such as TrueMoney and PromptPay.

Besides casinos, sports betting is also very popular with Thai. Betting on horse racing, motor sports, water sports, football and basketball are all very prominent forms of gambling.

“How can you gamble if you already have little?”

If you're right it's hard to understand, but if you live in a country where working in the lower class doesn't lead to a good life then you should try something. The problem is that gambling is often not done in moderation.
In NL I also went to the casino with someone who had a "lucky hand" because of a lack of money. Bet 100 euros and then be satisfied with a profit of 50 euros. First skim the lake and continue playing until it was often used up…..
Gambling in TH is often based on ultimate winnings, while a return of 8% is not bad either.
The one with money can gamble on a stock exchange and the one without money has to do it with another game.

Dear Leo, then you should ask yourself to what extent you have become part of the system if people can come to you for their further livelihood after spending money. This way you can maintain the gambling behavior of people in your vicinity. Why should you donate and not borrow? Why don't you fall for it anymore if you think you have to play the nice farang yourself. I find it extremely strange often how farang behave towards Thai.
