Several people have posted here about ABN-AMRO's cancellation of their bank account. I myself was also stunned about the cancellation, especially because in April I had asked an ABN-AMRO branch about the cancellation, no not for you, your account is active due to the many debits and receipts. Yet I also received the letter on July 19, which was dated June 29. So almost 1 month on the road.

It was also stated that I had not responded to a similar letter before and that they were now going to block the account after 3 months, but had never received a letter before. In fact, they must also do this by registered mail to prove that you have been informed. As long as that has not happened and you do not respond, ABN-AMRO must keep the account immediately.

As mentioned earlier, I would come back to it when I would be in the Netherlands and whether I could open another bank account with another bank.

Before I left for the Netherlands I made contact with Rabo, ING and van Landschot bank. ING was immediately rejected. At Rabo I received an e-mail back that I had to report personally to a bank branch and they had to decide that.
I also received an email from Van Landschot and I had to make an appointment by telephone to call from Thailand, which I did. I was able to open an account with Van Landschot bank without any problem. Afterwards I received an email with conditions that I had to meet. Those conditions went way too far for me, even had to call in a notary or lawyer to prove something. I had made an appointment at the office but canceled it in Thailand.

Well, went to Rabo the day after arrival, consulted there and showed some documents and also mentioned that ABN-AMRO had canceled my account. She also mentioned that this could be done by all European banks with regard to European rules, but not yet at Rabo. They first had to investigate everything before they could promise me that a bank account could be opened. However, they wanted a Dutch address on the bank account. That could also be with family. Also a little later to Regio bank, same story actually.

Then we went to a bank branch of ING, where we spoke nicely, by the way, at all banks. Explained my problem and also that I had banked with ING in the past, but that was years ago. She looked in the system and where my name was still there and my Thai address was also listed there. Still had to state my Thai tax number, but I had it with me. Within 10 minutes I first obtained a temporary debit card and a transfer service was also set up for my automatic payments. So well arranged. Only my original debit card is sent to Thailand, it is blocked but yes the post is the problem, so wait and see.

A day after I had a new ING bank account, Rabo also called to say that it was in principle possible to open an account. Regio bank also called after 2 days that I could open an account at my Thai address.

There are clearly possibilities, but the disadvantage is that you have to go to a bank branch in the Netherlands to report there personally.

So now I'm going to wait and see whether ABN-AMRO will close my account on the date they have specified, I won't cancel the account myself and leave some money on it.

Would like to note that ABN-AMRO has not sent a letter to all people living outside the EU, and also that some are given ample time, even more than 1 year, all a bit strange.

I also received a letter and have transferred most of the money to the rabo bank by now.
I already had an account here so that was easy.
I do blame the Abn for not paying all the interest. (I have to close the account from them)
The capital savings account consists of an interest + bonus.
Inquired in advance and I would get everything so money transferred and guess what?
Only receive the standard interest and not the bonus interest.
Sent a letter 2 weeks ago and of course no reply yet.
So that's just getting kicked out.

For what it's worth, I opened a 10-year deposit of 500 euros with internet banking at ABNAMRO.
I have no idea if it's good for anything, but maybe they can't just close that deposit and have to wait for the entire term.
After all, I have signed a 10-year contract with them and I will wait and see what they will do next.
And if they do close it, I'll be no worse off than before.
And then I can then object to the closing of the deposit.

To date, no response has been received from ABNAMRO to this.
Not even to my objection that I have lodged against the closing/blocking of the account, if I do not close it myself.

Mind you, it says blocking in the letter.
Apparently the money stays with ABNAMRO.
Putting the money in a bag in front of the head office is apparently not an easy thing to do.

People with reliable family, who have a small business, might be able to authorize that company to collect 1 eurocent daily with an automatic direct debit.
Transactions enough then it seems to me to have an active account.
It is possible that automatic transfer to family is also possible, but I have never really looked into that.

Whether this is good for anything, I don't know either, but if the amount is more credible, than a eurocent, they may not be able to just stop that direct debit, even though it says otherwise in that letter from the bank.
After all, the bank would then block money to which a third party is entitled.
Money that is in the account.
That third party will then be harmed by the bank.
He can then file a complaint against the bank.

      Dear Ruud,

*I would like to know how you can close this deposit. I have internet banking from ABNAMRO. Perhaps you can explain that through this file. This way others can also benefit from it and all information about ABNAMRO remains in one place

you can also send an email to [email protected] If you leave your email address there, I will send my name and address.

      greeting. Jan

        Dear Jan,

Google will never be my friend, but sometimes it's pretty easy.
To save myself a long story about how to open a deposit account over the internet, here is a link to the page.
He explains everything much clearer, no doubt, than I could.

        Ruud.

When I moved to Thailand I was already a Rabo customer. Personally passed on my change of address to the bank. The man at the bank told me that a number of pension funds did not make payments to foreign accounts and that they therefore simply maintain bank accounts. Rabo does not send account statements, not even necessary with internet banking and I have to have new cards sent to an address in the Netherlands. Well arranged

ABNAMRO is very short-sighted, I returned (temporarily) to the Netherlands 1 year ago with 2 children. The 3rd child is still studying in BKK. Now she has been to the Netherlands in March, has 2 accounts with this bank. 1 account is at my address in the Netherlands due to. bank cards, the other is still on Thailand.
ABN is now closing this account in Thailand and now it comes, it cannot be transferred to her other (Dutch) account: She is not registered with the municipality, so this is checked with the BSN number.
By the way, this is the 2nd negative with this bank, in 1975 I emigrated to South Africa and I had to open a NON-resident account, which cost 5 guilders with each transaction. No problems at Rabobank, no extra money despite address in Pinetown.

Indeed, the Antisocial Bank Netherlands has no decency at all. And no system either. It is really too crazy for words. You will also not receive an answer to emails. Not even a confirmation of receipt. Now 3 but emailed, called 2 times and still no message back. And that is a bank that has been saved thanks to tax money. Gives a "good feeling" that the former Boss of this bank is now the informant of the cabinet to be formed.

I have not yet received a letter from the ABN, but it could also have been lost in the mail.
if you receive a letter, you will also receive a bank mail. so I can check whether a letter has been sent.

    • nico brown lobster says up

I don't have an answer yet.

    • Roel says up

      Nico,

You will not receive a message in your mailbox about this, only a letter that will be sent by post.
I myself have not heard from an account manager such as Preferred banking, but also from an account manager.

    Dear people,
I also have an account with ABNAMRO. For years !!! Was a good customer there too. In addition to current and savings accounts, I also had all my insurance policies there. .
ON ABNAMRO'S ADVICE concluded a pension plan. It will now be released in June 2018. But ABNAMRO states that I must close my account within 6 months AFTER June 29.
After complaining about this, I was told that if I could substantiate that the cancellation would cause problems, I could get a 2-month extension under certain conditions. (so until the beginning of February 2018).
I only received that answer after 5 weeks (ABNARO will respond to your email within 5 working days) and after I contacted their customer service via WhatsApp. THEN, after a week, an employee called me asking me to email the letter again because it had not been received and then I would receive an answer within 1 week. (which happened).
This email was very businesslike and immediately raised a number of questions that I asked by email the same day. Emailed BOTH to the employee in question and to the department created for this purpose. NOW I have been waiting for an answer for 4 weeks already.

    – My question is whether ABNAMRO can close the account. You have an agreement with them, right?
    – Taking this situation into account, you should ask yourself whether you still want to be a customer of ABNAMRO. (so not, they don't want you as a customer, but you don't want them as a bank,
    – is there any way to collectively take action against this decision. (It is a clear ANM policy and has nothing to do with Dutch or European regulations, otherwise other banks would do the same. As far as I am told, SNSbank and ING do not intend to do the same.
    – keep the account with ABN until April 2018 (so longer than 6 months after the letter was rejected by ABNAMRO. IN April 2018 I will come to the Netherlands and can then open an account at another bank. You must appear in person for identification. ABNAMRO was also unwilling to pay me the costs to be incurred
(flight ticket ZVK-BKK-AMS + a 2 nights hotel to reimburse to open another bank account in the Netherlands. (and I wouldn't even fly bussiness but economy!)

Apart from everything, I have the idea that I have long been written off at ABNAMRO. I was a prefred banker with their own account manager. But in the last year I have noticed little or nothing of that.

I am curious about the reaction / experiences of other blog readers

    Regards,
    Jan

Yes you are absolutely right. I also think that ABN deliberately spread the closing of the accounts over a longer period. So that not everyone starts protesting at the same time. The first people were already written to last year. So that now there is no point in uniting anymore. Because if everyone had been written to at the same time, and had taken action. For example, by involving the ombudsman. He would have vindicated the clients. Because those interests would outweigh those of ABN.

  8. ruud says up

You do not have to close the account, but the bank will then block the account (as stated in the letter).
Probably that's all they can do, or will do for now.
They probably shouldn't just send your money to a known account of yours, otherwise they probably would.
But an escrow account is still an existing account.

It is possible that a phase 2 will come into effect if you have not closed the account with ABNAMRO, but that will take time in any case.
Perhaps there will be one final warning first.
You can also start a complaints procedure, which may have a suspensory effect.
Perhaps that time will suffice if you can go without that account for a while, if it gets blocked.

But these are just ideas, how well they work I don't know.
After receiving the letter, I took out a 10-year deposit (you can do that from 500 euros) and objected to wanting to close the account and now just wait and see what will happen next.

At least very little so far.

    Hello
Why not use social media facebook or twitter action started.
And let ABN feel that way and know that this is not good advertising for them.
The Dutchman supports the ABN supports the ABN the Dutchman.

After being a loyal customer for more than 50 years, I myself am more than fed up with this bank.
And I am now busy transferring all my accounts and shares to 2 other banks in the Netherlands where I already had accounts.
And also to a Thai bank , because after all you live and do you also live here , or am I seeing that wrong .
But for how long is the question for the other Dutch banks.
Because they too can come up with the same story in the not too distant future, thanks to our great European Union.
My preferred banker department didn't even receive a single email or anything.
What I do not understand, what I read in the response of the submitter, is that he wrote that after 2 days he received a call that he could open an account at the Regiobank at a Thai address.
I am also a customer there, and they told me a while ago that if I wanted to open an account now, this is no longer possible if you live outside the Netherlands.
The same applies to the ASN bank, both are part of the Volksbank.
SNS – ASN and Regiobank .
The best part of all this is that this ABN AMRO sees a lot of money disappear, because this money not only applies to customers who live in Thailand, but also elsewhere in the world.
I therefore sincerely hope that they will feel this good in their banking wallets .
Because assume that many big fish will also leave the bank.

    Jan Beute.

      Jan,

Read carefully, at Rabo I had to have a NL address and at Regiobank it was possible at my Thai address. I myself still have my own house in NL so address is not a problem.
Now at ING and also at my Thai address.

  11. Marc says up

Just use a Dutch address (give family, child or friend). Furthermore, everything at the banks goes through internal; mail is always just advertising, so you can have it opened. you do not have to be registered with a municipality.

    • John R says up

Last year I changed my Thai address (via the internet) to that of my sister. Problem solved in 5 minutes. And also safer if a debit card is sent again.

      • Roel says up

Yes, you can do that, change your own address via the internet, but you will then become a Dutch tax resident again according to the bank. I considered that too but didn't.

        • Stevenl says up

The bank is wrong. I have had my account at a Dutch address, of my brother, for years and years, and that really has no consequences for my tax status.

  12. Rakisan says up

If you don't have anyone in the Netherlands that you can or want to bother with a postal address, you can also rent a postal address (just like you can rent a PO box). That is a more expensive option, it costs about 35% more than a PO Box, but you do have a 'regular' address. There are commercial offices that offer this, such as http://www.schuttershof.eu.

You can then agree that mail will be forwarded, scanned or stored for you.

Since 'the bank' does not check whether you are also registered with the municipality, this could be an extreme solution.

    • Roel says up

You must be registered with the GBA, I wanted to create an and/or account with my son or convert my account to one and/or, but both people must then be registered, they will check that or can do that.

    • Bert Schimmel says up

I have a PO box in the Netherlands, even before I left the Netherlands, despite the fact that ABN-AMRO has canceled my bank account.

  13. Nico from Kraburi says up

I have several accounts with ABN AMRO, have been deregistered from the Netherlands for 11 years, and have a postal address in the Netherlands. Never told where I live because I haven't been asked yet.
My postal address costs about 10 euros per year.

    • Fransamsterdam says up

And you are sure that you have not yet been deregistered from the BRP?

      • Fransamsterdam says up

No, ok, you only have a postal address for the bank, and they sleep peacefully.

    • John (Laos) says up

      Dear Nico,
Sounds interesting ! I need a Dutch address next year for, among other things, an annuity. Don't want to bother the family with this.
Did know that it was possible to purchase a postal address in the Netherlands, but had understood that the costs are extremely high.

So Nico, can you give me some more details. Perhaps via this blog / file. In that case, everyone benefits and the information remains nicely in one place.

If that causes problems, please email me; [email protected] I will then contact you.

      Regards,
      Jan

    • Cees 1 says up

I would, even if it can be done through a "trick", definitely no longer want to have an account. What an asshole couch that is! They still exist thanks to tax money.
And in return they kick you out. So inform family, friends and acquaintances about this via social media. Because in the Netherlands probably very few people know that this is happening.
