Fishing in the Mekong

The NOS came up with a story about the Mekong river this week. A Thai fisherman tells his story and tells that in the past he easily caught five kilos of fish a day. This has not been the case for the last 4 years, he barely catches a kilo a day. Barely enough to feed his own family.

The big problem here are the dams built in Mekong river. Dozens have been added in recent years. First in China, where the Mekong rises in the Tibetan plateau, and later also in neighboring Laos. The newest dam was commissioned in October. Laos uses the dams to generate electricity which they then want to sell to neighboring countries.

Earlier Lung Jan already wrote an excellent background story about this problem. If you missed it, you can still read it here: www.thailandblog.nl/BACKGROUND/de-mekong-steeds-meer-endreigd-door-grenzeloze-ambitie/

The NOS article is of course also interesting and you can read it here: New dams drain part of Southeast Asia: 'I no longer catch a kilo of fish'
