Next Monday is Queen's Day and Mother's Day in Thailand. Queen Sirikit, in full Somdet Phra Nang Chao Sirikit Phra Borommarachininat (Her Majesty Queen Regent Sirikit) then celebrates her birthday.

This time she will celebrate in Hua Hin in the presence of her husband King Bhumibol.

Mother's Day in Thailand

For the Thai, the Queen's birthday is also Mother's Day at the same time. This also applies to the king's birthday on December 5, it is also Father's Day.

Queen Sirikit is the wife of Phra Chaoyuhua Bhumibol Adulyadej, better known as King Rama the Great. The king and Sirikit first met in Paris in 1946. They fell in love and got married on April 28, 1950. She was then eighteen years old. The couple had three daughters and one son between 1951 and 1957.

'The big'

Bhumibol (Rama IX) became king in 1946 after the death of his brother, Rama VIII. This makes the monarch the longest-reigning monarch in the world. In Thailand he is honored as 'The Great' because of his active commitment to the Thai people through various royal projects. Examples include the replacement of opium cultivation by the cultivation of coffee and tea among the hill tribes. With his invention of the Chai Pattana water aerator, a simple device to supply oxygen-poor water with oxygen.

Bank holiday

The Queen is at least as popular in Thailand. Her birthday is also a national holiday. In 1956, Sirikit was regent for a time when, according to tradition, the king retired to a Buddhist monastery for some time. She did so well that she was appointed queen regent. So she has an active role in the Thai government.

The Queen wrote an autobiographical book In Memory of my European Trip (1964) and several songs. She does a lot of charitable work. She is, among other things, honorary president of the Thai Red Cross.
