Questioner: Peter

I need to apply for my new extension before September 20, 2026. My passport is valid until September 7, 2027. When should I apply for a new passport?

Maw, does this new extension still fit in the old passport?

You can still use your current passport.

However, your annual renewal will then run until the expiry date of your passport, which is 7 Sep 2027. That is, however, only 13 days less than 20 Sep 27.

Personally, I would just keep using my current passport and accept that “loss” of 13 days.

Then make sure you have a new passport by the next renewal, which will be before September 20, 2027.

However, if you really want the full year now and not those 13 days less, then you must ensure that you already have a new passport for this annual extension, in other words before September 20, 26. But is it worth it? But of course, that is up to you to decide.

Please note that when you have a new passport, regardless of whether you apply for it now or next year, you must first have the current period of stay and visa information transferred from your old passport to your new passport before applying for a new annual extension.

There are immigration offices that handle the transfer and the annual renewal on the same day, but some prefer to do them separately, meaning you actually have to go twice: one day to transfer the information and one day for your new annual renewal.

There is a form for transferring from the old to the new passport.

It is quite possible that they will ask for a copy of all pages of your old passport.

Stop by your immigration office and ask exactly what they need to see for the transfer and whether that can be done on the same day as your annual renewal.
