Dear readers,

In Thailand you can't do without cash.

For years, I've used Wise for my debit card payments. However, Wise hasn't gotten any cheaper. Especially if you want to withdraw more than €250 in a month. Incidentally, they don't specify whether that's a calendar month or just 30 days. You'll then get a 2,69% exchange rate surcharge for withdrawals over €250, effective May 1st.

I recently got a Trade Republic debit card. This card is part of Visa, just like the Wise card. Trade Republic is a German online bank. They offer 2% interest on current accounts and investment options. Incidentally, this bank is covered by the German deposit guarantee scheme (€100.000).

They now indicate that withdrawing money abroad over €100 at a time is free of charge. They use the Visa exchange rate, but without the exchange rate surcharge and additional fees. Of course, you always pay the 250 baht ATM fee. When calculating an ATM withdrawal of 30.000 THB, Trade Republic is cheaper than Wise.

Ask:

  • Does anyone have experience with this Trade Republic debit card?
  • Can you use this to withdraw cash everywhere in Thailand?
  • And if so, what is the maximum amount of baht you can withdraw from a Thai ATM?

Yours faithfully,

Rob

I used my card at the airport last year and it worked fine. You can also use it at any card machine, for example in restaurants.
