Reader question: Bringing kitchen appliances to Thailand
30 Januari 2018
Dear readers,
I will soon settle permanently in Thailand. Bought a new house, kitchen in it. I am a tidy type and a fan of built-in appliances in the kitchen. Now I found out that this is not very common in Thailand and very expensive. Is it allowed, for example, to take a combi microwave in the hold of the plane to Thailand?
And will I have problems with customs?
Regards,
Jeroen

Hello Jeroen, nice prospect! Not everything is allowed in terms of import, especially about new stuff you pay the main price if you are unlucky. She wanted me to pay 60 euros for imports for my bread maker, which cost 100 euros new. There are really enough built-in appliances here, Ikea sells the electrolux app. works fine! Häfele, which is also located in Phuket, also sells excellent built-in appliances. Good luck!
Then you should look on the internet for bread makers. There is a wide choice. I bought one through Lazada a month ago. It was a surprise when the device came home: the description was in Chinese and Thai.
No problem, I thought: on the internet you will quickly find at least an English description. Other than two YouTube videos in Chinese, I found almost nothing about this machine. Well, on the Aliexpress website, someone had made the effort to translate the menu into Spanish and English.
I found an email address of the manufacturer and asked them for an English description. Then I got an answer the same day. Unfortunately there was no foreign description for this model, but they did send me a PDF file of the model that was close to mine.
Now I'm getting a lot further and yesterday I baked a nice brown bread with it.
That thing even came with WiFi!
Indeed, I also agree with what most say: buy your equipment here in Thailand. Enough choice.
Combi microwave is not that expensive in Thailand
Do not carry water to the sea 🙂
I bought a combi microwave at Big C (Electrolux)
These are also available at various other stores, such as Power Buy
kind of devices available, at normal prices.
There is a lot of kitchen equipment for sale in Thailand. Prices vary. Usually not much more expensive than the Netherlands. Service if something breaks is easier.
Indeed. You are also starting to see more European cuisines.
Home pro for example, don't forget Ikea in Bangkok either.
Jeroen,
Do not take anything with you to Thailand, closely yes, especially a lot of money.
Everything is for sale here and otherwise you run the risk of having to pay import tax, which can amount to 330% of the new value.
IKEA sells complete kitchens and is installed throughout Thailand, but also Miele, Siemens, Poggepol, etc. You will rarely come across a built-in refrigerator alone, it gets too hot in a closed space.
Important; there are regular (several times a year) fairs with all kinds of kitchen equipment at Impact in Bangkok, just Google it. All manufacturers are displayed here with their equipment.
The Impact complex is just as big as the Jaarbeurs and the Rai together.
So plenty of choice.
Greetings Gerrit
Jeroen: Think if the airline approves that you bring a box of 60x60x60 that this will not cause any further problems, is it a new one or a used one? With new electrical items you have a chance that you have to pay tax. Incidentally, in Thailand and especially in Pattaya there is a good range of built-in appliances including many good German brands, also plenty of built-in stoves, dishwashers and refrigerators. The prices for good stuff are comparable to the Netherlands, good luck and enjoy your new home.
Take a look at the webshops of, for example, Powerbuy, Homepro or Lazada. Then compare the prices there with what it costs in the Netherlands. I brought almost nothing with me at the time and bought everything here. It must be something very special if it is not for sale here.
I only live 6 months a year in a rental house that is completely western furnished. I am someone who likes to cook and bake a lot. Bought good kitchen supplies even here in Thailand. Not more expensive than in the Netherlands and also warranty is ok. Tw Kitchen planetary mixer, electric oven, espresso machine, deep fryer, blender, slicer, so why consider everything really superfluous. And the most important thing if something breaks and falls outside the warranty, no call-out costs and low hourly wages on repair.
Almost all kitchen equipment is also for sale here in the Isaan, I only miss 'De Blokker' here with its household items from Tomado, Leifheit, etc. and those easy folding crates, especially now that they want to use less plastic bags here in the future, it is a folding crate ideal.
Have a look at Alie express. Nowadays, when we are looking for something, it is our safeword. Watching FF on Alie
If you don't see paying import duties as 'problems with customs', there is no problem. But of course you have to take this into account and report it yourself to avoid fines.
Jeroen, I think such a microwave here (in Thailand) is also cheaper …… and also has the right plug.
Success!
Addition: immediately also the right plug and if the manual is not included in the English language, it can probably be downloaded from the internet.
Good quality cooking pots and pans are also for sale here. You will find them in Blueport Hua Hin, for example.
Do count on double (at least) the European price.
Will advise you to install Dutch earthed sockets. Especially if you change your kitchen appliances a lot. Those Thai are 2 times nothing. The Dutch earthed plugs are simply for sale here, just remove the Thai plug and put the Dutch one on. child does the laundry and you have fun for a lifetime. Have my entire house with Dutch plugs and sockets.
