Living in Sangkhom

Sangkhom (in Nong Khai province) is a beautiful, peaceful village situated on the banks of the Mekong River. It is a place far removed from mass tourism and is particularly popular with people seeking pure nature, tranquility, and an authentic “slow-life” pace.
Here is an overview of what it is like to live there in 2026:
Living and Accommodation
In Sangkhom, you will not find modern high-rise condos or large apartment complexes. It is a small-scale, rural environment.
- Huizen: The selection consists mainly of detached houses or bungalows. Many homes are simple, but often offer plenty of space and a garden. Prices are very low compared to tourist regions; you can often find a decent house for just 5.000 to 10.000 THB per month.
- Condos: As mentioned, these simply aren't there. If you want the modern conveniences of a condo, Sangkhom is probably not the right choice for you.
- Search: The real estate market in Sangkhom is informal. It is best to stay in a guesthouse for a few weeks and ask around for properties for rent at that time, or to connect with the local expat community (usually via Facebook groups for Nong Khai province).
Prices and Daily Life
Life in Sangkhom is extremely affordable, since you live according to the standards of the local Thai population.
- Food: You mainly eat at the local market or at small, family-run restaurants along the river. For 40 to 60 THB you have an excellent local meal.
- Lifestyle: It is very quiet. For “Western” amenities (large supermarkets, cinemas, specialized medical care) you have to go to Nong Khai city travel, which is about a 1 to 1,5 hour drive.
- Transport: A private scooter or car is necessary to get around and to explore the vast nature in the surrounding area.
Cultural Activities and Surroundings
The region around Sangkhom is known for its impressive nature and spiritual places:
- Wat Pha Tak Suea: This is an iconic temple built on a hill. The temple's skywalk offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Mekong River and neighboring Laos.
- Natural beauty: There are various waterfalls in the area, such as Than Thong en Than ThipThe area is also popular for viewing the “sea of mist” from viewpoints such as Phu Huai Isan during the cooler months.
- River life: Daily life revolves around the Mekong. It is a beautiful place for walks along the banks, cycling, or simply relaxing and enjoying the sunset over the water.
- Cultural atmosphere: It is a close-knit community where traditions still play a major role. It is a place for reflection, meditation, and discovering Isan culture.
Is it pleasant for a foreigner?
- Pros: Very low costs, beautiful nature, a very relaxed atmosphere, and a warm welcome from the locals.
- Points of attention: You are largely on your own. English is spoken less in this part of Thailand. There are few Western facilities, and for serious (medical) matters, you depend on the distance to the city of Nong Khai or Udon Thani.
In short: Sangkhom is ideal for someone who truly wants to “disconnect” and lead a life that is fully in harmony with Thai nature and culture.

I have been asked to provide some information about the ins and outs of my presence here. Let me state first that I see myself as a part-time journalist at best. Writer is also allowed, who would have thought.
I left for Thailand at the age of 54 after having been engaged, married and in love with my Thai love for about eight years.
The grey clouds in the Netherlands became too dark, the recession, the employer talked a lot, a lot about Poland. The genie had been out of the bottle for a while, and not always the friendliest.
Apartment from 1928 sold for a fat profit after twenty years of living there. And moved into our Thai house that we bought years ago. We are talking about the year 2008.
Like the waves of the sea on a restless day in Thailand, we have now been in calm waters for a few years, provided with my pension.
Hobbies of all kinds within the boundaries of our existence, after reading, writing has occasionally been added.

Will Sarakham, Roi Et, Nakhon Phanom, Kalasin, Sakhon Nakhon, and Yasothon also get their turn? They are provincial capitals, each with its own atmosphere, and considerably larger than the village of Sangkhom. Sri Chiang Mai seemed a bit more appealing to me, as it has a beautiful boulevard with a view of Vientiane across the river and is not far from Sangkhom and the mentioned attractions.
Patience is a virtue, Ger Korat. I really appreciate that other and lesser-known regions are finally getting their turn.
