Thailand is preparing for heavy rain and stormy weather. The Thai Meteorological Service (TMD) has a weather alert handed in. From July 16 to 20, a powerful monsoon trough is expected to hit much of the country and bring widespread heavy rains.
According to the weather service, the monsoon trough will gradually move from the north to the northeast and the upper central region before turning into an active low-pressure area over the upper South China Sea. In addition, a fairly strong southwest monsoon will prevail over the Andaman Sea, the south and the Gulf.
Officials have indicated that the expected conditions will result in heavy rainfall across Thailand, with isolated areas set to experience very heavy downpours in the north, northeast and central region, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, east and south.
The TMD has issued a warning for severe weather conditions that could lead to landslides and flooding, especially along waterways and in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to exercise caution and stay alert during storms. Motorists are advised to take extra care on the roads to ensure their safety and that of others.
In addition to the heavy rainfall, the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf will experience strong winds and waves reaching heights of 2-3 metres. Thunderstorms can cause waves of more than 3 meters. As a precautionary measure, small boats in these areas are asked to remain ashore during this period and to keep abreast of weather forecasts.
