Major weather changes predicted for Thailand
The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an extended weather forecast with important information about expected weather changes in Thailand for the coming week.
Temperature and fog in the north
A weakened high pressure area over Thailand and the South China Sea will bring a slight increase in temperature of 1-3 degrees Celsius. This will be accompanied by cool mornings and fog in higher areas. However, in mountainous and high-altitude areas it will remain cool to cold. Authorities advise residents to take precautions against the health risks associated with these temperature fluctuations. Travelers are also warned to be careful when driving in foggy conditions.
Back in the south
In the south, the northeast monsoon over the Gulf of Thailand is weakening, leading to less rain in the southern provinces. However, moderate to strong winds will continue to blow, with waves of 1 to 2 meters in the lower Gulf regions and waves of more than 2 meters in stormy areas. Sailors are advised to navigate with caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms.
Upcoming weather changes (December 12-16)
According to the TMD, a stronger high pressure area from China is expected between December 12 and 16, which will spread over Thailand and the South China Sea. This will lead to cooler temperatures and stronger winds in the northern and central regions. In the south, an intensification of the northeast monsoon, combined with a low pressure area, will cause increasing rainfall and heavy to very heavy downpours. This increases the risk of flooding and waterlogging in coastal provinces.
Specific provinces and timelines
On December 12, heavy rain is expected in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. On December 13 and 14, the hard-hit areas will expand to Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Ranong and Phang Nga. Between December 15 and 16, provinces such as Krabi, Trang, Satun, Phuket and Ranong again will also experience heavy rain. Residents in these regions are urged to prepare for possible flooding and remain vigilant.
Warning to sailors
Sailors navigating the Gulf of Thailand are advised to exercise caution and adhere to safety protocols, especially in areas experiencing heavy rain or stormy weather.
Air quality above Thailand
Improved air circulation in northern Thailand is expected to reduce the accumulation of haze and dust particles, keeping air quality between good and moderate. This is good news for residents and travelers in this region.
Advice to the public
Travelers and residents are strongly advised to monitor weather developments closely and take necessary precautions to stay safe. Whether it is protection from fog, rain, strong winds or flooding, vigilance remains essential to minimize risks.
