Thailand has ambitious plans for aviation and wants to play a central role in the region for aircraft maintenance, repairs and renovations. To achieve this, 406 billion baht must be invested.
The government gave the green light for a reform plan on Monday. Foreign companies can participate and receive more than half of the shares in return. The reform plan concerns the upgrade of the three major international airports Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi and U-tapao, as well as the 36 provincial airports.
Thai Airways International will enter into an agreement in principle with Airbus for the establishment of a commercial center for maintenance and repair. This center should be operational in three years.
Spokesman Kobsak Phutrakul believes Thailand has the potential to become the aviation center of Southeast Asia, as the country serves 193 routes around the world. The number of foreign visitors is expected to increase from 30 million now to 53 million in 2023.
Freight transport also receives the necessary attention in the reform plan. Some laws will have to be simplified to stimulate the transport of air freight. Now 1,3 million tons are transported per year, the target is 3 million tons.

Tja, het is nog geen jaartje geleden dat een audit aantoonde dat Thai Air tot een van de meest onveilige luchtvaartmaatscappijen behoorde omdat ze niet over het hoogopgeleide onderhoudspersoneel beschikken. De kosten welke genoemd worden zullen ongetwijfeld ook doorgerekend worden. Nu, ik mag hopen dat ze het kunnen waarmaken. Het zou eens wat anders zijn dan “de hub in tienerzwangerschappen”…of…”de hub in meeste verkeersongevallen”…of…enz…
You can give a "hub" to the airports, it is better and safer that the "hub" is used for the (overdue) maintenance of aircraft, so that they can continue to fly internationally to Europe!
Ik moet er niet aan denken, vliegtuigonderhoud in Thailand. Ik betrap mijzelf erop dat ik me beter voel als er een farang met 4 strepen voor in de buis zit.
Quite a striking decision and there is a slight deviation from the rules for foreign companies. They can therefore not solve it themselves and now foreign companies are allowed to help in the context of an ambitious plan.
Wonder how they want to beat KLIA and Changi Singapore, think there is a little more sense and policy behind that. This year's increase in the price of kerosene will probably not help either...
