Whether it is the changeable weather of the past few weeks, the start of the summer holidays in the Central Netherlands or the good air fares is unknown, but the demand for last minute flight tickets is extreme at the moment.

A large airline ticket provider has seen a significant increase in the number of visitors to its website in recent days and has recorded growth rates of 40% to 60% in booking numbers.

35% leave within 2 weeks

“We know that the beginning of July is traditionally a very busy period, because people often decide at the last minute to go away in the summer. But this year the demand is extremely high,” said spokeswoman Lieke Fransen. “The trend of booking shortly before departure has been visible in recent years and will continue this year. 35% of the bookings received through our website in the first days of July are for departure within 2 weeks. And almost 60% for departure within a month.”

The weather also always influences summer booking behavior. The last few weeks have been changeable. During the beautiful spring, people waited a little longer before finalizing their holiday plans and people may now decide to go out in the sun. This period is also used by many airlines to promote the last seats. It is therefore definitely worth looking for a good last minute offer.

Popular destinations: Bangkok

A number of cities in southern Europe, such as Málaga and Nice, are high on the list of most booked destinations in recent days. But traditional toppers such as Bangkok are also doing well. Barcelona also remains the absolute number 1 for the summer months. Popular spring and autumn destinations such as London and New York are now less popular. The top 10 of booked destinations are as follows:

  1. Barcelona
  2. Bangkok
  3. Málaga
  4. Madrid
  5. Nice
  6. Istanbul
  7. Curaçao
  8. Lisbon
  9. Copenhagen
  10. London

Frankly, I am surprised that Bangkok ranks so high. Politically, there are tensions, in addition, the exchange rate of the euro/bath is not favourable.

It doesn't mean anything to me since it only concerns 1 provider. It is nice that Bangkok is second to them, but it is really a coincidence. Furthermore, the provider only speaks in percentages that do not say much. If you already sold 2 tickets more in the past and now 3, that is already an increase of 50%.
I think it is just as commercial a story as the real estate agents at the time who also gave very rosy figures at the beginning of the downturn in house sales.

    Wishful thinking.

I know all 10 destinations well to very well. Of course I recommend Bangkok, but nearer Lisbon is my favourite.
It's such a beautiful city, with wonderful restaurants, bodegas, I could make a long story out of it, but this is a blog for Thailand, isn't it?
I still regularly swoon over a melancholy CD with fado music, wonderful!

a flight from Bangkok to Amsterdam for 20.000 baht is little if it concerns a return, but certainly not cheap if it is a one-way trip.

Yes I agree with you, Egypt Air and Royal Jordan and Air berlin cheaper, but these first 2 have k.. departure times and stopover. If I go with AB, I'll be exhausted for a week because of the legroom.

If I also made the mistake of not booking a return ticket with EVA, then it will be relatively cheaper from them. Checked that again yesterday. The curve is now that if I book bkk-ams-bkk with open return, tickets are available.
but nothing is available for ams-bkk-ams.

China air was sold out, and KLM was on 49000 thb for a one-way ticket, I put on another pair of glasses, because I thought I must not read that correctly.

Let's hope for the Thais and the travel world that Bangkok comes into the picture. In Pattaya it is currently quieter than I have ever experienced, except at the coup of General Suchinda about 15 to 20 years ago, when there was a negative travel advice.
The few tourists there are mainly from Saudi Arabia, India and Russia. Maybe the Westerners are put off by that?

This comes as no surprise. Thailand and therefore Bangkok was recently voted the best travel destination outside Europe by many travelers. Tourism to Thailand is growing and will probably grow towards 19 million visitors in 2012. So draw your conclusion from this!
