Cheap flights to Bangkok a utopia? No, it really can. And to prove it, I booked a return ticket to Bangkok myself for only 424 euros with Etihad Airways, including taxes and fees.

At the beginning of May I will go to Thailand for two weeks. Later that year I will go again, but for a longer period. Because I regularly place flight offers on Thailandblog, I like to give readers an advantage, I now know pretty well how and when to search. That is a difficult job for some. We therefore sometimes receive angry e-mails from readers that the offers we post on Thailandblog cannot be found or booked. One more reason to put it to the test yourself.

My interest was aroused by the so-called 'Open Jaw' tickets from Etihad. That may sound complicated, but it isn't. An 'Open Jaw' ticket means that your departure airport is different from the arrival airport. I depart from Schiphol and fly back to Dusseldorf after my visit to Thailand. For me personally this is no problem. Traveling to Schiphol takes me an hour and a half and returning home via Dusseldorf takes just under two hours. A comrade picks me up by car in Düsseldorf, that has also been arranged.

For this low price you have to be prepared to change trains in Abu Dhabi, both on the outward and return journey. The transfer time is only two hours, great for stretching your legs. Flight times are also favorable. I leave Schiphol at 22.00:30. I can also take XNUMX kg of luggage with me.

Cheap flights to Thailand are really possible. And when you consider that of those 424 euros, more than half are taxes and fees, you ask yourself how it is possible to fly to Bangkok for such a low price…

    Dear Khan Peter,
I have read your letter with interest. I also flew with Ethihad in mid-June 2013, but then from Schiphol, was indeed a bit more expensive. But it was an annual ticket, around 600 euros. I had a long layover in Abu Dhabi, no problem for me, waiting 15 hours. Now I will fly back to the Netherlands on February 27 for a short period. I hope that I can return to Thailand for a long period of time at the end of March, beginning of April 2014. NOW I have a question where even at Schiphol they couldn't help me, with the long layover I asked if I took my suitcase off the plane in Abhu Dabhi because the 15 hour wait was so long, didn't get an answer, so I say then I want to take my suitcase in Abu Dhabi myself, went, but a lot of problems, Now on the return journey February 27, 2014, I have a 2-hour layover just like you, I can be sure that the suitcase will fly back to the Netherlands with me, or do I have to check out again and then check in the suitcase again. Maybe you have an answer to my question.
    Kind regards.

    • Khan Peter says up

No idea Anja. But you can call the Etihad service deck. You even get Dutch speaking employees on the phone.

      • Joop says up

If they label your suitcase to Dusseldorf at Suvarbhumi, your suitcase will be fine… have a good flight… Joop

        • anja says up

          Hi Joop,
From Suvarnabhumi I first go to Abu Dhabi then wait 2 hours and then on to Amsterdam, does it also apply that the suitcase is labeled at Suvarnabhumi? I am worried that my suitcase will not arrive in Amsterdam.
Never flown with stopovers, but so cheap. Also try with an OpenJaw ticket.
          Yours faithfully,

          • KrungThep says up

Yes, your luggage will be labeled to your final destination, Amsterdam in this case.
In Abu Dhabi you do not have to worry about your suitcase.

    • LOUISE says up

      Hi Anja,

      Yuck, 15 p.m., but ok.
Just hand luggage on wheels with the first necessities/change in it and I assume you can take a shower somewhere at the airport.
We both have 1 with us.
Happened to us once, 2 days, after a very long flight, in the same clothes.
      So never again.

      LOUISE

      • anja says up

Thanks Louise for the tip. The waiting was nice, could sleep well for a few hours, in Abu Dhabi they have a kind of large luxury seats at the airport where you have to wait that you can convert into a bed, then you can place a hood over the seat and then you also have a little privacy and it is almost soundproof. You can store your hand luggage under the luxury seat and have it with you when the hood closes, rested after 4 hours and walked around a bit and took a shower, all worth repeating, and it made a huge difference in price, so for a small 600 euros up and down, and that for an annual ticket. Will try to do it again. Most tickets may be cheaper but have limited validity, my ticket is valid for almost 1 year and because I study in Thailand, I can still go home once a year.

        Greetings Anja

I have flown three jatren with Etihad. No problem with the suitcases you don't have to do anything on Abu Dhabi the suitcases automatically arrive in Bangkok with your flight.

for which period does this price apply? we are a gay couple and of course also want to fly to bangkok for such a low price and from there to phuket or pattaya. do you also know a way to fly to phuket or pattaya for the lowest possible price.

    • Geert says up

Is it relevant that you are a gay couple?

    • Cees says up

Arrange your tickets as early as possible! Fly yourself for € 618. Return from Amsterdam to Phuket via Abu Dhabi with Etihad with a transfer time of 70 minutes on both flights. Ticket already bought in August. The same ticket is now € 1427 per person!

Hi Khun Peter, you're not there yet, are you? Have a nice trip anyway! Perhaps a (too) short response, hence this extra line. Greetings Gerrie

    • Khan Peter says up

No, it will take several months. Ah, time flies.

I can also never find anything that is good to buy when I want to leave.
So two weeks ago I called 333.travel.
They had three options for me, I am now leaving at the end of December, with emirates.
Stopover of two hours and under €700,=
So I won't be looking for myself from now on.

  5. Nico Meerhoff says up

We also flew cheaply to BKK with Ethiad thanks to an openjaw ticket. However, if I try to score a cheap ticket for my grandchildren from Bangkok, I will only get high prices, whichever combination I try. Incidentally, I only find traveling with Ethiad interesting if there is a clear price difference. Otherwise I still prefer Emirates.

    • Rory says up

Try Bkk- Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.
With tiger or air asia to Malaisian airlines or Singapore.
Then on to Europe (with another ?? company)

  6. Enrico Bake says up

Hello, I also fly (2 people) to Bangkok for € 430 return
    Departure 31/12 return 27/2. I found this through ticketspy.nl
This site is constantly looking for the cheapest options around the world.
You will then be referred to the relevant link.

    Enrico

    • Khan Peter says up

Yes, Ticketspy is interesting to keep up to date with offers and open Jaw rates. I just booked my tickets on the Etihad website. Can also be done by phone, then you pay 10 euros more.

  7. Patrick Witkamp says up

    Khan Peter,

it may have to do with the dates of departure and return I think? There is no way I can get a price below € 500. I am sometimes curious about the exact dates of your tickets!

    • Khan Peter says up

Early May and stay 14 days. But the cheapest tickets may already be gone. When I booked there were still 4 seats.

      • Patrick Witkamp says up

That could still be true, I'm looking for early February, stay 1 month

  8. marc says up

hello, just got back (approx. 3 weeks) and flew with klm directly (from belgium) with the thalys to Schiphol (from antwerp 1h) and trg for 566 euros, i booked a 2 month in advance

  9. Rory says up

If you find something on the internet, it doesn't have to be the lowest price.
I myself have experienced several times that having it checked and sorted out at a travel agency at the counter can sometimes yield cheaper and surprising rates.

As a comparison site you have skyscanner on the internet, but also Kayak.
Favorable prices via Kras – D trips where my experience is that Kras often thinks just a little further.
At a travel agency they often have more airlines than listed on the internet.

I myself live in the Eindhoven region and let the price prevail with me with a margin of 50 euros return.
For me, the airports are. Brussels, Dusseldorf. Frankfurt, Cologne/Bonn and Munster/Osnabruck.:

Also go shopping in Germany (German travel agencies).
In Dusseldorf there are many on the intermediate gallery (above) in the main hall.

We now have tickets ourselves with Emirates from Dusseldorf (in May-June) for 498 Euro pp. Total travel time 12 there and 14 back. This arranged through Royal orchid travel service. Sitting in Altenau and (were also in) Dusseldorf. She is thai and he is vietnamese seem to have a separate counter somewhere.

This June/July my wife flew alone at the last minute. Tickets bought 3 days before the flight. From July to August. cost then via Thai air from Bangkok 750 Euro.

I hope you can do something with this

    • topmartin says up

Royal Orchids is therefore a division of Thai Airways and not of Emirates. Even though the two have an association with each other. I think it's a joke that travel agencies would have more airliners than I-Net. All airliners have their own I-Net site. You mean it reversed?. Many travel agencies do not have all airliners in their program!
That is true with the intermediate gallery in Düsseldorf Airport. But that means, with a packed suitcase to Düsseldorf (on suspicion) and then hope for a cheap flight? Honestly, dear Rori. I can't do anything with your story. From BKK you can fly for 24.000 Bht, which is much less than your € 750.
      great martin

      • Mathias says up

Dear top martin, what are you all writing. Royal orchids, it's royal orchid travel service. Take a look at the website royalorchid.de. you respond to Rori and you start about royal orchid is from thai airways, not so. It's just a travel agency and what association Emirates has with Thai airways is also a mystery to me? Thai airways is Star Alliance, Emirates is not!

        • rebell says up

Dear Mathias. Then I would recommend taking a look at Thai Airways (website). There you will find all information about Royal Orchid. Then immediately transfer to Emirates. There you will find everything about the association between Thai and European Championship. The fact that Thai Airways is a member of Star A does not exclude an association with EK. Perhaps there is a travel agency called Royal Orchis? The reader who can read knows that Royal Orchid was discussed. I hope this clears up any confusion. Thanks. great martin

      • Rory says up

I also did not say that you should stand there with suitcases. There are about 30 travel agencies there, you can just shop there and go later.

Further if you have read we have tickets of 498 Euro.
I only stated that in the middle of the high season we booked tickets 3 days before departure through Royal Orchids Reise Service for 750 Euro. The lowest close was above 1.000 Euro.

Just wanted to say that you should not only look at Dutch travel agencies, but that German and Belgian ones also often have great offers.

Oh yes, now for the quick decision maker, KLM also has surprising offers from Amsterdam via 5 days advantage. It takes a while to search, but directly for 788 is not crazy either.
Just depends on what you want.

        • rebell says up

It is no problem to go to Düsseldorf regularly and test whether there are cheap flights available. If you add the times and transport costs for these information rides to the flight price, you might eventually be able to fly cheaper from A-Dam? rebel

          • Rory says up

Oh sorry. I live in Eindhoven. My employer is in Brussels. Work for a company in Leuven and mainly work in Germany. (Osnabruck, Hamburg, Munich, Bremen, Hanover, Stuttgart and Dortmund.

We do our shopping at the Kaufland in Goch and.or Geldern or at the Real in Krefeld. The and our clothing mostly in Dusseldorf.
Travel time from Eindhoven to the Dusseldorf departure hall is 1 hour and 15 minutes when it is busy.
It's just combining work with pleasure.
It is fortunately true that not only Dutch people live in Holland. May the people who live in the north, east and south also live.

If I lived in Groningen I probably flew from Hamburg 🙂

  10. Ko says up

It seemed too good to be true so I looked at Ethiad. The price is indeed correct, but it is the one-way ticket. The return flight costs about the same, so it's just expensive. The site is a bit confusing in this regard.

    • Cornelis says up

I must not be able to read, Ko, but Khun Peter is talking about a return ticket for that price, right?

    • Khan Peter says up

The cheapest that can be booked now costs 494 euros.
When to book: until 31 December 2013 (23:59)
When to Travel: All of 2014 (low fares not in July and August 2014)
Fly from: Amsterdam Fly back to: Düsseldorf
Minimum stay: 3 days. Maximum stay: 1 month

      • topmartin says up

Thanks for the additional information. It is therefore not interesting for him or her who wants to and can stay for 90 days. Granted ; a (max.) month in Thailand, not wrong.
But for him/her who has a wife (husband) or house and/or family, this is absolutely completely uninteresting.
From the experience in this blog we know that most expats want to stay for at least 90 days (and longer). great martin

Still a question that I haven't seen yet… I want a one-way ticket Astd/Bangkok because I want to continue via China to Vancouver after 2 months… who can advise me on that…

    • BA says up

Try china airlines or EVA, I think the Asian airlines are a lot easier with that.

With most European airlines, a one-way ticket is often more expensive than a return ticket.

    • rebell says up

there you can think of -one world ticket-?. A tour around the world?. If you already circumnavigate 75% of this earth, a world ticket might be the cheapest. You may and can interrupt this with every landing. The best is; just visit different travel buiros and test their knowledge about this. You will be amazed. rebel

  12. Willy says up

    Dear,
I have read the article but I regret that it only mentions tickets from Schiphol or Brussels to Bangkok, but it never mentions tickets from Bangkok to Schiphol or Brussels and back and those tickets are considerably more expensive. I have found so far is almost 700 euros.
And since I live in Thailand but still have to go to Europe every year for a new annual visa, it would be interesting to know where to book cheaper tickets.
Is there no site with cheap flights from Thailand to Europe?

    • LOUISE says up

      Morning Willy,

      Agree.
      All flights always from Amsterdam.
But have to go to the Netherlands for an annual visa????????
Can also be heard here at every immigration.

      With VR. gr.
      LOUISE

    • Rory says up

Try flying via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.
Info maybe via Greenwoodtravel in bkk

    • Rory says up

      @Louise
      Just search with KAYAk
I am coming to B or NL before the beginning of March at about 580 euros
      Took a quick look.
On brussels via Jet air and on amsterdam just emirates
Tickets are time-bound, you have a high and a low season

  13. seveneleven says up

If, like the undersigned, you only fly to Bangkok once a year, or sometimes once every two years, then I don't really see the advantage of those cheaper Tickets.
Because you have indeed lost a few euros less, but you walk around for hours at the airport of Abu Dahbi, for example (sometimes even lost a complete day), sometimes you have to transfer, and you are also dropped back at an airport where you do not come from came. And then you are forced to make the rest of the journey by car, bus, or train.

For me, nothing beats just non-stop with eg EVA or China-Airlines.
Costs more yes, but I am at a normal time in Bangkok, and for that one time that I fly I have those (extra) euros for it.
Would I fly more, yes then I would also compare prices, definitely.

  14. Robert says up

Of course I immediately went to look at the Etihad website …..but couldn't find the open Jaw ticket anywhere. Only prices of traveling there and back which I don't find really cheap (from Amsterdam)
Eva Air and China Air are direct and slightly higher in price. And a stopover of a few hours .... well if you are willing to do so, there are alternatives with B class companies.

    • topmartin says up

Yes, going to see that right away have More people done. But if you don't have info on how the booking was made, you can't check anything = book the same thing. TIP; for JAW you have to click -multiple flight targets-.

Just waiting for the next “crazy fool days” from Etihad. Just got back. Had ticket for 477. Saw the 424 last week but couldn't get any free in May (yet). Also had a newsletter from Etihad that it was offer days so maybe more will follow….

It strikes me more often that there are people who can book tickets for incredibly low prices that all others cannot find anywhere (anymore). How is that possible ?. Maybe it was a one way and no return ? Maybe the price was without tax etc?. Then the flight data play a role. From where, at what time, on what day, with what type of aircraft, start from what country, transfer time, etc.
I would like to do a test on one and the same PC with about 25 people. I assume that at least 90% of the participants will not win the same prize. That seems more fun to me instead of an evening of playing checkers or clubbing. What some don't know is that the PC plays a role in the price outcome. top martin

  21. Rory says up

    Best martin
Searching with different search engines often yields a lot.
Try KAYAK and then from different airports.
A very nice one and this one has not yet been mentioned with British Airways from Brussels and / or Antwerp.
Straight from London. Depending on the season also very cheap.

    • great martin says up

Thank you for the TIP dear Rori and for your additional information. I admit that this makes it a little more understandable for the reader. It proves what I often say: as long as you don't have all the data, you can't make a comparison. I wish you a nice flight. Maybe we'll see each other at Düsseldorf airport?. great martin

  22. Bernard Vandenberghe says up

I was once told that when looking for cheap flights it is best to turn off/refuse the cookies. Apparently, this tells the search engine what price you normally book. Myth?

    • great martin says up

You're right. Without trying to explain that phenomenon in detail here, the airliners know your preferences. There exist -cleaner program. to free your PC from this – junk. Firms do NOT ask you in advance if you agree to these super cookies.

We tried this out with 2 PCs next to each other. The result is astonishing. With PC -A- (which was always used for bookings) the flight cost €634, and with PC -B_ only €584. The reason ; on PC -B- exactly, 100% the same flight was requested for the very FIRST TIME under a false name. Bottom line, as a loyal customer you can simply pay approximately €50 more.

After we cleaned PC -A- with a few programs and booked under a false name, we managed to book there for less. Things went wrong again in the second test. This means that your PC IP number is also verified by the airliner. We then suppressed this again by surfing anonymously. I now surf on 2 servers in the USA. These encrypt the whole mess and continually generate new (fantasy number) IP codes. The airlines can't do anything with that. I am now seen as a new customer. These have a discount on the price?: this is not mentioned anywhere. Or, . loyal customers simply pay more. That is even more absurd, but still possible.

At the end I booked the same flight for € 538 from DÜS. With the feeling that I have sewn the airliner (for approx. € 100), I have never flown so well with them. top martin
