Thailand Airports Plc (AOT) has presented its ambitious six-year expansion plan Don Muang Airport revealed. The capital investment plan, which has been approved by the cabinet, aims to develop the third phase of Don Mueang International Airport, with an estimated investment of 36,83 billion baht. The project is currently in the design phase and is expected to launch tenders in 2024, with construction starting in 2025. The new facilities are expected to be operational in 2029.
The main goals of the Don Mueang Airport development plan are to increase capacity to accommodate passenger traffic, improve the quality of service for air and ground transportation systems, and increase efficiency. Currently, the airport can handle 30 million passengers annually.
In order to accommodate an additional 50 million passengers annually, a third passenger terminal is being built that will provide 160.000 square meters of usable space for international passengers. The existing passenger terminals 1 and 2 will be renovated to serve domestic passengers, with a total usable space of 240.000 square meters becoming available. This effectively transforms Don Mueang Airport into a full-fledged domestic aviation center.
The development plan is divided into six segments, including the construction of Passenger Terminal 3, the expansion of the north concourse, and the development of operational areas, aircraft parking areas and public utilities.
According to current estimates, passenger numbers will gradually recover, with a forecast of 95 million passengers by the end of this year. AOT expects these numbers to continue to rise to 200 million by 2027. These predictions are in line with those of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which expects global travel to return to pre-Covid levels between 2023-2024.
