Dear Editor/Ronny,

I have been married to my Thai wife for 12,5 years now. I myself am 66 and my wife is 61 years old, she still works and I have just retired. We would like to go to Thailand in October 2019. Which visa type should I apply for?

We already have a house in Bangkok. Since a lot of people have different situations, I thought I'd ask people who know. Do we have to apply for a visa for 90 days first? Then after 60 days ask for 1 year with multiple entry? How far in advance should you apply for the 90-day visa? I wondered if we are still eligible to enter Thailand because the euro is throwing a spanner in the works. My pension = € 1850,-

Regards,

Kees

Dear Kees,

  • If you want to obtain a year extension in Thailand, you must first apply for a Non-immigrant “O”. Single entry is sufficient in that case. This can be done in the Thai embassy or Thai consulate.
  • One month before departure is more than enough time to apply for your visa. Upon entry, you will receive a 90-day residence period. You can request a year extension 30 days before the end of your stay.
  • If you want to leave Thailand, you must also apply for a “Re-entry” beforehand. If you don't, you will lose the extension when you leave Thailand.
  • You don't have to worry about your income. 1850 Euro is more than enough. For married people, it is 40 Baht income per month or 000 Baht in a Thai bank account.
