Dear readers,

We are going to Thailand soon. We fly to Bangkok and return to the Netherlands six weeks later.

When we fly to Myanmar in Bangkok, I read that you can arrange your visa to Myanmar at the embassy in Bangkok. When you return by plane you will receive a 30-day stay/visa in Thailand. So if you do that in the last 2 weeks of your holiday, you can just stay the 60 days.

Is that correct or do I have to arrange another visa for a longer stay in advance?

Many thanks for advice,

Jeannette

Dear Janet,

Belgians/Dutch people who enter Thailand via an airport will receive a Visa Exemption of 30 days (possibility to extend at immigration for a maximum of 30 days - see Dossier visa). When you return from Myanmar, via the airport, you will therefore receive a new Visa Exemption of 30 days. Arrange it so that you plan your visit to Myanmar before the first 30 days have passed.

Yet this one. Airlines are allowed to check whether their travelers comply with the visa requirement before departure (not all companies do this). If you leave for longer than 30 days without a visa, it is possible that you will be asked questions at check-in about your length of stay and the lack of a visa.

Make sure you have proof that you will leave Thailand before the 30 days are up (eg airline tickets to Myanmar).
Not all airlines check this, and to be sure it is better to check with your airline beforehand. Preferably do this by e-mail, so that you may have proof at check-in.
