Dear Ronnie,

After 12 years of legal cohabitation with a Thai girlfriend in Belgium, I got married in Belgium this year. As I am retiring next year I would like to find the correct information to apply for a married visa. How to legalize this for Thailand and where?

What is the right way to meet all requirements and what are the options? At the moment we both still work in Belgium.

Thank you for helping me in this way.

Regards,

Dear Redback,

You can obtain a Non-immigrant “O” visa, Single or Multiple entry, based on your marriage at the Thai Embassy in Brussels: www.thaiembassy.be/visa/ or the Thai Consulate in Antwerp: www.thaiconsulate.be/portal.php?p=Regeling.htm&department=nl

The link contains what you need, or contact the embassy or consulate if something is not clear to you. You always get an answer.

A Non-immigrant “O” Single entry is sufficient. Upon arrival you will then receive a residence period of 90 days. You can then extend this at immigration by one year on the basis of your marriage.

You can find what you need for this here.

TB Immigration Info letter 024/19 – The Thai visa (8) – The Non-immigrant “O” visa (2/2)

www.thailandblog.nl/dossier/visum-thailand/immigratie-infobrief/tb-immigration-info-brief-024-19-het-thaise-visum-8-het-non-immigrant-o-visum-2-2/

It will be necessary to register your marriage in Thailand if you want to obtain the extension based on “Thai Marriage”. You will then receive a Kor Ror 22 after registration. That is proof of Thai marriage, but that the marriage was entered into outside Thailand.

What exactly you need to register your marriage…

I have no experience with this (married in Thailand myself), but I suspect proof of marriage in Belgium, translated and legalized by the Belgian Foreign Affairs Legalization Service and then legalized by the Thai Embassy. Can also be done through the Consul in Antwerp I thought.

diplomatie.belgium.be/nl/Diensten/legalisatie_van_documents

Whether that is sufficient as a document and whether more documents are needed I do not know. It is better to contact the Thai Embassy or the Consul in Antwerp.

You can of course also request your extension on the basis of “Retired”. Then the financial requirements are higher, but proof of marriage is not necessary.

Perhaps there are readers who have recently registered their Thai marriage in Thailand. They can then tell you the latest information or correct documents.

  1. Marius says up

RonnyLatYa's answer is spot on. Get your international marriage certificate from the municipality. Legalization in foreign affairs. Legalize at the embassy. Have it translated into Thai. Have it legalized at Foreign Affairs Thailand. Pick up Kor Ror 22 at the Town Hall in Thailand and immediately register where you will live. I skipped registration by the Dutch embassy, I thought it was enough and I have Kor Ror 22
