Visa Thailand: Entering Thailand by land

Dear editors,

We are currently cycling in Laos and will soon cross the border to Thailand. Our plane departs from Bangkok on December 8th. We would like to cycle in Thailand for about three weeks, but at the border (Pakse-Buntharik) we only get a visa for 15 days.

It was our intention to cross the border at Aranya/Poipet, but now I read that this is not so easy anymore. Another solution would be an extension through an immigration office, but I cannot find whether such an office is present in Buntharik.

Is there another possibility to be in Thailand this time?

Thanks for the answer.

Yours faithfully,

Marie-Jeanne

Dear Marie-Jeanne,

Upon entry by land, as a Dutch or Belgian, you will indeed only receive a 15-day “Visa Exemption”. Only via an airport it is 30 days.

You can then extend those 15 days by 30 days at an immigration office. Costs 1900 Baht. Usually you can only submit the application for an extension the week before the end date of your “Visa Exemption. You can apply for such an extension at any immigration office. I don't know if there is an immigration office anywhere in Buntharik district. You may have to go to Ubon Rachaithani immigration for this

Ubon Rachaithani Immigration
189 Moo 10 Tambon Nikhom Sang Ton-eng Lam Dom Noi
Amphoe Sirindhorn, Ubon Ratchaithni 34350
ตม.จว. more
189 ม.10 ต.นิดมสร้างตนเองลำ โดมน้อย
อ.สิรินธร จ.อุบล 34350
New phone number is 045-366000

Perhaps there are readers who are more familiar with that area and know an immigration office that is closer.

Other solution you can consider. First get a Tourist visa in Savannakhet (Laos) or possibly Vientiane. I don't know where you are now, but maybe you should pass by anyway. With that Tourist visa you get 60 days upon entry, which is more than enough. A Tourist visa also only costs 1000 Baht and you do not have to ask for an extension in Thailand which costs 1900 Baht.
